it never fails to amuse me how aggressively people try to defend a fictional characters heterosexuality

god forbid a queer fan reads a character as queer or identifies with them right. I mean it's not like you can just watch the show and ignore these people, noooo

No more edgy than ATRT.

The problem here is Supernatural is one of the absolute worst shows to go to looking for support/a character to identify with.

The show is notorious for its fanbaiting and other than that it's just a Straight Man Parade. Any other show could have better representation than Supernatural, easily.

The problem with identifying with characters is that a lot of the time you end up doing it without trying to, meaning to, or wanting to.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So you think it's okay that some people think that whether or not Destiel becomes canon is a legit gay rights issue, and that they focus on that rather than on there being actual representation?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, the 'why do you care about THIS when there are OTHER MORE IMPORTANT THINGS' argument

Maybe queer people latch onto Dean because he's relatable to them in some way, plus it's a show with a huge cult following so of course people will get invested.

No it's not a gay rights issue (partly because most people read Dean as bi, I know it's shocking that you can be attracted to two genders! And it doesn't even erase the fact he's attracted to women! But mostly because you're just concern trolling), and shockingly they DO enjoy things with actual representation too!

Like they didn't just decide 'we're going to pretend this character is gay for no reason', subtext is A Thing which people read into, and queer subtext is ridiculously common and has been happening for decades.

It's a problem when people put the show on a pedestal and claim it is a valid example of bi representation.

People relating to Dean is unfortunate but it's important to recognize that he isn't a lgbt icon or w/e.

Subtext is definitely a thing, but so is people throwing two hot dudes together and wanting them to fuck because that itself is hot, especially at the expense of female characters who are already shit on enough as it is. (SPN already conveniently sidelines its women to focus on the manpain, unfortunately.)

Oh my fucking Christ.

I am not concern trolling, I am talking about a specific batshit subgroup of fandom who literally think that Destiel is a gay rights issue and who ignore actual examples of representation. Those are the people that I and other people have a problem with, and you're so hellbent on feeling like you're being oppressed or some shit that you think it's some sort of all or nothing thing. Not to mention that not everyone who slashes is fucking queer. Have you really not noticed that? Have you really not noticed the straight women who are into slashing hot guys because it's fapping material and not because they can relate to those guys?

Not everyone who appears to be on your side actually is, or actually cares about actual LGBTQ issues.

DA Like they didn't just decide 'we're going to pretend this character is gay for no reason'

That is exactly what they did, and all your condescending SJ sneering doesn't make it any less true.

There is no queer subtext in this horribly-written, comedic-supernatural-horror TV show about two brothers who hunt demons. To claim there is any kind of underlying spirit of LGBT support in wanting Dean to be queer is disingenuous and insulting. It's pure personal sex fantasy, and a harmfully rabid reinforcement of traditional masculinity.

be real. if this character wasn't a pretty white guy, no one would give a shit about him and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

it's all about slash and turning homosexuality/bisexuality into a fetish purely for fap fodder.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
You can view the characters however you please. It still won't make it canon.

Plus, ignore destielers/ "fanon = canon" crowd? LOL! Have you met this fandom? Cause Jensen did, and he didn't look happy about it.

Queer people are welcome to identify with whatever straight character they want, there are plenty of them in media as it is.
