We'll have to agree to disagree
(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)As for his character's dialog, this is Penny Dreadful after all: they all sound like pretentious idiots, but they are so aesthetically pleasing to the eye I really don't mind... TV viewers are easily distracted from plot and logic by beautiful actors, in case you didn't know!
Also, have you actually read the original Oscar Wilde novel? Because in the book, Dorian Gray IS a shallow, unsympathetic piece of trash, so even if you feel the Penny Dreadful character's dialog is stupid, I don't think it's a matter of him not holding up to a moral or heroic ideal.
Personally I think Dorian Gray's a great character in Penny Dreadful, and that he provides a nice contrast to the others who are so drive, so tragic... and Reeve Carney does a great job as Dorian Gray, in addition to his nearly surreal prettiness. He is is a real asset who manages very well in a fairly minor part so far, in my opinion!
He's a lot more interesting to watch than Josh Hartnett's character whose role in the story is much more important and who is depicted as a lot more sympathetic and should therefore be the center of our attention.
In a show where one acts opposite great actors like Timothy Dalton and Eva Green, it's hard not to be overshadowed and look like a rank amateur: Harry Treadaway and Rory Kinnear pull it off effortlessly. Billie Piper... not sure: if we see more of her next season we'll have more material to consider. Hartnett doesn't so far, but I hope he improves his game in future, because he seem to be trying his best, but he's just not that good an actor. And speak about horrible as well as unlikely haircuts! The only difference is that Reeve's weirdly modern haircut suits the actor whereas Josh's doesn't, even though he is just as good-looking.
