[Penny Dreadful]

Dorian's hair is teeeeerrible. The man needs to seduce a good stylist. As for the character himself, I'm willing to give him the opportunity to grow in season 2. That last scene between him and Vanessa was amazing though.

Shouldn't he have light hair? Why do they always make guys have darker hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
He does have light hair, actually: it may not look like it, but that's because Penny Dreadful is all about atmospheric lighting! Foreboding, surreal events and gore, you know. :)

The title of the show is very apt so we get most of the action in the middle of the night, in dark places etc. Probably terribly cold, damp and rank, too. Brrrr...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Dorian was a waste of time, too. Very disappointing. :-/

He was my least favorite part of the show. A part of it was his hair.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No lie, his hair was so ridiculously bad I'd wince every time he had a scene.

It took me a few episodes, then I realized he looks a bit like Connor from Angel. The thing is, love him or hate him, at least Connor was INTERESTING. Cuz, yeah, the guy who should be interesting, charismatic person on the show is... Zzzzzzzz...

I agree about the pretentious dialogue, too. There's one line in particular that he said (in the scene after they all go to the Grand Guignol) where I have expected Ms. Ives to bust out laughing at how ridiculous it was.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeez, enough with the fucking hair already. So what.

Just get back to an Dorian/Ethan subplot.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
One sexual encounter is hardly a subplot. I also strongly suspect it was thrown in for shock value and you're never going to see anything remotely explicit ever again, just like how we were shown multiple het sex scenes with nudity, but not even a fraction of exposed buttock for Dorian and Ethan's encounter.

Because this is still television even if it's cable, and not fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who realizes Ethan was high on absinthe at the time and that Dorian technically took advantage of him? The whole Dorian/Ethan situation is actually kinda skeezy.

He grew on me over the course of the season. I'm interested to see where they take his character.

Am I the only one who thought he was a vampire? I know nothing about The Picture of Dorian Gray.

He has a portrait of himself and the portrait ages, so he doesn't. That's from the book though, haven't seen this.

I had to do a double take when I realized he was Dorian Gray because I couldn't believe they'd let him have such stupid hair. And Reeve Carney is good looking, but he's also sort of too generic and unremarkable-looking to play a character who is renowned for his striking beauty. Personally, I find virtually everyone else in the main cast (Vanessa, Sir Malcolm, Frankenstein, Ethan) much more notable and attractive than him. Hopefully the show will give him more of a purpose and change his hair next season :/

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I could have written this in my sleep. His emo-hair distracts the fuck out of me.

Also, seriously, he looks so out of place with the rest of the cast, and I don't give a fuck about him.

We'll have to agree to disagree

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's so pretty! Granted, the hair is a tad jarring considering the time period, but he manages to pull it off, which a less handsome guy wouldn't.

As for his character's dialog, this is Penny Dreadful after all: they all sound like pretentious idiots, but they are so aesthetically pleasing to the eye I really don't mind... TV viewers are easily distracted from plot and logic by beautiful actors, in case you didn't know!

Also, have you actually read the original Oscar Wilde novel? Because in the book, Dorian Gray IS a shallow, unsympathetic piece of trash, so even if you feel the Penny Dreadful character's dialog is stupid, I don't think it's a matter of him not holding up to a moral or heroic ideal.

Personally I think Dorian Gray's a great character in Penny Dreadful, and that he provides a nice contrast to the others who are so drive, so tragic... and Reeve Carney does a great job as Dorian Gray, in addition to his nearly surreal prettiness. He is is a real asset who manages very well in a fairly minor part so far, in my opinion!

He's a lot more interesting to watch than Josh Hartnett's character whose role in the story is much more important and who is depicted as a lot more sympathetic and should therefore be the center of our attention.

In a show where one acts opposite great actors like Timothy Dalton and Eva Green, it's hard not to be overshadowed and look like a rank amateur: Harry Treadaway and Rory Kinnear pull it off effortlessly. Billie Piper... not sure: if we see more of her next season we'll have more material to consider. Hartnett doesn't so far, but I hope he improves his game in future, because he seem to be trying his best, but he's just not that good an actor. And speak about horrible as well as unlikely haircuts! The only difference is that Reeve's weirdly modern haircut suits the actor whereas Josh's doesn't, even though he is just as good-looking.

Yeah, it's clear he's not a naturally great actor but he does well considering I think. He won me over in Demimonde which was really the only time he had anything to do anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Darn, and here my first thought was, "isn't he pretty!" Apparently I'll forgive anything for a nice set of cheekbones. (Never heard of the show, but the kid is cute!)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I agree the center part is unfortunate, but I think he's incredibly pretty. And hey, he's Dorian Gray... it's kind of the point of him to be pretentious.

Another tall, dark and handsome Dorian Gray adaptation? God I hate it when they do that. He's supposed to look like an angelic, virginal choirboy, ffs!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Damn, it feels like every single modern adaption goes out of their way to make him dark haired. How many times can an author mention a character's hair colour?
