At least in movie canon when had Xavier ever forced himself into Erik's mind? In the first movie at the conference he let Erik leave and he did not have a helmet.

He would have certainly stopped Mags from taking Rouge if he could. But I agree with the idea that protection does not equal discrimination. Someone with a bullet proof vest, might not be anti-gun.

As for Magnetism versus Psionics... in the comics Magneto once developed a mind control helmet that affected the brains electromagnetic field. However in the movies it's never stated that his powers actually work on magnetic principles just that he can "manipulate metal." This might explain why he can affect lead and other non-ferromagnetic metals (Iron is magnetic but not when it's dissolved in blood).
