Tell me about your equivalent to the FBI

?

Zankyou no Terror made me realize I have no idea what the Japanese equivalent is, and by extension anywhere else in the world.

Pointless question, but hey Star Trek fans: is the Romulan Tal Shiar the equivalent of the FBI, the CIA, or the NSA?

Probably combo CIA/NSA.

Agreed.

The Cardassian Obsidian Order is the same with a dash of the SS thrown in for good measure.

Given the time period, I always figured the CIA.

I'm just here because you said the word "Romulan".

Uh, CSIS I guess, but they're sort of the CIA too, and the RCMP also has many of the same functions of the FBI.

National judicial police I guess. We don't have "federal whatever" as we're a nation-state.

Yuus, excellent topic anon.

Historically there has never been a national centralised force to take on serious investigation in the way you have elsewhere in the UK. The role has always been taken on by the Metropolitan Police due to the fact that we don't have the issues with state lines, and the Met has by far the most experienced and well trained officers.

Specifically the role was taken on by Special Branch. They have always been world class detectives, and ended up being the basis for similar set ups right across the world, and particularly in a lot of the common wealth countries. I could build them up for a while but that gets obnoxious, suffice to say the fact that they were from one of the worlds biggest cities, very low corruption (comparatively), and dealt with serious paramilitary terrorism on a constant basis meant they were outstanding.

However, in 2006 they ended up being merged with the counter terrorism branch (the two existed alongside each other for a while) to form CTC, but the popular rumour is that they still exist as their own entity within CTC.

At this point another organisation called SOCA was formed. They were very similar to the FBI insofar as the remit was the investigation of paedophile rings, financial crime, organised gangs and corruption. For a number of complicated reasons this organisation was remade into the NCA (National Crime Agency) last year. They’ve done a huge recruitment drive, and the intent is within the next couple years for them to take CT work off the Met.

How this is going to work will be interesting to see. It’s going to be a complete logistical nightmare with CT being the largest branch outside of TP (beat policing), and the Met absolutely doesn’t want to give up the prestige, training, and funding that CT work offers. The reason for the change is also open to interpretation with some suggesting that the government doesn’t like the amount of power that the Met wields, and want to do everything they can to disempower the police as an entity.

Though the NCA it has to be said, have some damn slick uniforms, and already appear to be performing much better than SOCA. Just look at the sexy mother fuckers right here.

Who wouldn’t want to swan about in jeans, and those slick black jacket hoody affairs, with the cap and crown on your back.

Low corruption? You're having a giraffe mate. The only part of the met more corrupt than special branch was the old clubs and vice squad. Christ, special branch could be bought for half a packet of salt and vinegar crisps. If they weren't being paid off by the irish mob to look the other way, they were being paid BY the government to perform off the books assassinations and fit people up. They are still at it, any protest in Britain and SB is there in the crowd giving it a good old stir so the rest can have an excuse to pile in. When they had the old Gfucknumber in Scottishshire in 05, the reason London got bombed when that was on was that SB was all up in Scotland trying to provoke the locals and the wombles into starting something. Even the Scotlandshire local filth complained about how the seconded Met officers, SB one and all, were behaving in trying to start fights. You know why they never found out who offed PC Blakelock? 'Cause that were SB, wanting a casus bellend for harsher measures against Londoners.

I am going to remember this phrase for use in casual conversation. "You're having a giraffe, mate!"

I...don't really thing we have one. We have federal police, but I honestly don't think the have the same jurisdictions (or competence, in fact) as the FBI.

We have the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). They operate everywhere in the nation and concentrate mostly on serious crimes and international and organized crime.
