I've been to a good first-year one, too. What immediately made me skeptical reading the accounts linked here is that these people talked about getting big-name guests who would have been very expensive or who do not do cons (outside of something like contractually-obligated appearances at ComicCon) and that's just reaching way too far and indicates these people had no idea what they were doing and had no experience organizing a con. A first year con can do fine if things are kept simple and small and at least part of the concom has experience organizing events. Cons can always get bigger and fancier later once they've had a successful start.
