(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)The manager subbed him on for Cillessen with about fifteen seconds of extra time left, pretty obviously because the manager thought he was a better penalty stopper. Duly saved two penalties and saw the Netherlands through to the semi-finals - a match they lost on penalties after one too many substitutions meant that they couldn't repeat the trick, leaving Cillessen to face the shootout - he conceded all of them and the Dutch were out.
In short, Tim Krul didn't do anything - if anybody did wrong, it was his manager, and in pure business terms it was the right decision. Human terms, eh, but that's football.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)Eh, I thought the shitstorm about it was ridiculous. Did it suck for Cillessen? Yes, but as we saw against Argentina, penalties aren't his strongest point. (Though didn't he save one of the penalties? I didn't see the penalties, but Argentina won with four, right?)
If anyone wants to blame someone, it should be van Gaal. He's the one who made the substitution and basically snubbed Cillessen. Which he didn't even really do, as Cillessen played in the next match again - honestly, you could say it was a snub to Krul, saying he's only good for penalties and nothing else.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)Aw i thought that was so emotional, i'm not even dutch, but i was so happy when these two goalies hugged after the penalties. both of them are great players and it just wasn't meant to be this time for them - i wouldn't mind if Holland won the Euro 2016 cup :)
Also, van Gaal -> awesome coach, i respect him a lot!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 02:13 am (UTC)(link)As a Manchester United fan, I have to have a certain respect for van Gaal's ruthlessness. ;-)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 06:53 am (UTC)(link)Ah, I didn't know that, but of course it makes sense. I assume Netherlands started?
I wanted a Germany-Netherlands finale, it would have been very traditional and absolutely explosive. But I'm happy with how everything turned out, even if Brazil lost it in the last game as well.

So maybe he's a better penalty goalie. So what? Wow.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)But anyways, blowing this incident up was so dumb. People criticize the dumbest of things.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)Sorry. Really don't like Neymar and think he basically got what he was asking for with all his dirty playing.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)This is how Alan Shearer commented on it and I agree with him 100%:
"Tim Krul was playing mind games, walking up to the Costa Rica players, taking his time to get onto his line. I don't mind that at all - you do what you can to get through. It's gamesmanship but the Costa Rica players have to try and handle it."
