Who is he? I'd like to google what he did since I have no clue.

Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul.

The manager subbed him on for Cillessen with about fifteen seconds of extra time left, pretty obviously because the manager thought he was a better penalty stopper. Duly saved two penalties and saw the Netherlands through to the semi-finals - a match they lost on penalties after one too many substitutions meant that they couldn't repeat the trick, leaving Cillessen to face the shootout - he conceded all of them and the Dutch were out.

In short, Tim Krul didn't do anything - if anybody did wrong, it was his manager, and in pure business terms it was the right decision. Human terms, eh, but that's football.

Still think it was a logical decision. (My brother and father who are reeeeeeeally invested in soccer thought it was foul play though) Nowhere as bad as the first Brazil game anyway!

Oh that's who he was!

Eh, I thought the shitstorm about it was ridiculous. Did it suck for Cillessen? Yes, but as we saw against Argentina, penalties aren't his strongest point. (Though didn't he save one of the penalties? I didn't see the penalties, but Argentina won with four, right?)

If anyone wants to blame someone, it should be van Gaal. He's the one who made the substitution and basically snubbed Cillessen. Which he didn't even really do, as Cillessen played in the next match again - honestly, you could say it was a snub to Krul, saying he's only good for penalties and nothing else.

They won with four penalties because the Netherlands missed two, so they didn't even need to finish the five.
Aw i thought that was so emotional, i'm not even dutch, but i was so happy when these two goalies hugged after the penalties. both of them are great players and it just wasn't meant to be this time for them - i wouldn't mind if Holland won the Euro 2016 cup :)
Also, van Gaal -> awesome coach, i respect him a lot!

There was one brilliant moment during the Argentina shootout when Cillessen failed to save one, and the camera cut to Krul, and he had the perfect McKayla Moroney "I would have saved that shit" face.

As a Manchester United fan, I have to have a certain respect for van Gaal's ruthlessness. ;-)

ayrt

Ah, I didn't know that, but of course it makes sense. I assume Netherlands started?

I wanted a Germany-Netherlands finale, it would have been very traditional and absolutely explosive. But I'm happy with how everything turned out, even if Brazil lost it in the last game as well.

Van Gaal did nothing wrong there. Calculation is his entire thing and doesn't everyone go into a match expecting him to have a card up his sleeve? I might actually care about MU next season.

There was wank over this?

So maybe he's a better penalty goalie. So what? Wow.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody did anything wrong. If it was a field player who would be subbed because someone else was a better penalty taker nobody would consider it wrong. Wow, that's really ridiculous. Cillessen nmight have been butthurt for a second, but I assure you he was happier that his team won, and realised the logic of Van Gaal's decision.

He has a double chin? But cute indeed!
