I couldn't watch very far. Usagi's voice was so, so grating.

Was Sailor Moon Crystal your first experience at watching the series in Japanese? Kotono Mitsuishi is the only voice actress who has returned from the 90s anime. Her Usagi voice sounds the same as it always has. It isn't the easiest thing to get used to, for sure.

Maybe it's because Usagi's design and animation is so much more serene and womanly, which makes the voice sound even more jarring.

I don't know; I've seen a few people who watched the original series say that they think the quality of her voice acting has gone down. It might be harder for her to pull off Usagi's voice after nearly two decades.

Yeah, I never watched Sailor Moon but I could hardly believe that was real voice acting. It's shrill and grating to the point of parody.
