I've not seen anyone disputing that though. I've just seen people frustrated that Toei didn't put any effort into Crystal. Instead, they decided to be as cheap as can be yet again. All that hype, delays and promoting of Crystal just for a shoddily animated anime.

The live action series flopped pretty big, especially in terms of merchandise sales (tough it had a decent cult following). I think they're just being cautious and not trying to break the bank.

Crystal still has decent designs and is fun even if it's not the best animation ever. If it does well maybe there will be a high budget movie or something.

I set my expectations low from the start. We live in a world with shitty reboots and anime is no exception. And their only purpose is to feed off an entire generation of baby boomer children who have this fixation on nostalgia in order to make some easy money. I'm got used to the disappointment.

I don't think the new one is 'cheap' so much as...far better suited to the still images of a manga than a dynamic, expressive show.

Was Sailor Moon Crystal your first experience at watching the series in Japanese? Kotono Mitsuishi is the only voice actress who has returned from the 90s anime. Her Usagi voice sounds the same as it always has. It isn't the easiest thing to get used to, for sure.

Yeah, I never watched Sailor Moon but I could hardly believe that was real voice acting. It's shrill and grating to the point of parody.

I don't think it will tbh. I think they'll stick super close to the manga and people will complain about how it's just a straight adaptation, no addimg anything of its own.

Eh. The first series had some episodes with truly terrible animation, there's no question. But it also had some episodes with really fantastic animation. It was pretty clear which eps of a season had the lion's share of the budget but the nice looking eps actually were gorgeously done. The movies were also beautiful.

But I think people wouldn't care as much about the flaws if the the style had worked better though. The flat expressions just don't fit Sailormoon - Usagi should always be expressive. And that's what I'm complaining about.

The old animation isn't anything to write home about, but they had some really nice moments when they had the time/budget. I think Crystal did a nice job animating Usagi's hair for example, but the way the colouring/shading throws me off.

Maybe it's just because I read the manga more than I watched the anime as a kid, but I kinda like the style of the new series. I think that the more muted colors fits the feel of the story more.

Yes, but the original series is also 20+ years old. And even considering that, certain episodes had amazing animation and all the transformation scenes from the old series > the new transformation.

And personally, the stiffness doesn't bother me nearly as much as the default, vapid ":o" expression every character sports in Crystal. They've practically made Usagi a different character due to that shit.

Yeah, beautiful shows have been made on shoestring budgets. But a combination of bad art design and poor editing/directing will accentuate the cheapness and create a product that looks fucking sloppy. Utena looked cheap sometimes, but it never looked sloppy. Talent and passion for what you make can go a long way in covering rough spots in a show. Why do you think everyone loves Kill La Kill? That show is cheap as fuck, but the design is so good and the animators clearly love their work and it creates something not just bearable, but enjoyable. Also there are other indicators of animation budget (or effort) that don't have to relate to actual fluidity of movement. There's also the amount of cuts and how much moves in a single shot. I've seen several cheap ass shows that have way more cuts and moving parts than Crystal.

Crystal... God, what the fuck happened. Do you guys remember that digital zoom in to Usagi lying on her bed?? What the fuck was that about.

Compared to the animation in American cartoons, anime just seem to be stiff in general. That's just their jam. I don't mind it that much.

However, the awful character design (the old designs were simpler, THANK GOD, which meant they looked awkward less often even with less than stellar artists), the messy static hair that everyone adores so much (yes there's random curls EVERYWHERE, but they rarely move independently), the PSone era transformation sequence (no, that's not like from a good video game, that's like from a video game when Final Fantasy IX first came out) and the lack of expressions (no, have YOU read the manga lately? there's plenty of silly chibi faces, shut up) ... and all of this in 2014, after keeping the fandom waiting and promising something epic.

Yeah fuck this and everyone who pretends the thing is super duper lovely. Every single Pretty Cure season is better than this.

I feel like this could be said about most anime tbh. But it's sort of the point though. It's cost efficient in order to put out the number of episodes on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
