The comparison gifs really do Crystal no favours.

I know. It's kinda sad. Like in the Crystal gif where Ikuko is getting mad about Usagi's grades, she doesn't look all that angry. Sure, she's yelling but that's about it. Thetes no miffed look on her face like in the on from the 90s anime.

Everybody must stay pretty at all times.

I also noticed that cometimes they showed the characters from behind when they were about to do an "ugly" face.

And in the gif with Haruna, she doesn't even look mad or upset. She's just got this kinda blank look.

It is just so strange. I'm reading the manga right now and there's just so much emotion and expression, but I didn't get that in Crystal's first episode.

I think you're right about everyone staying pretty at all times..

I don't know why people use the manga to defend how blank their expressions are. The first chapter alone is full of ridiculous faces.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why either.

And while I really like Naoko's art in the manga, it really doesn't translate well onto the screen. They should have taken a few more liberties with adapting the character designs. Then we would have this problem of limited expressions.

WHY AM I SEEING SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE ELSE?!

I am starting to think that I am mad. Or that I'm from an alternate reality. Because to me, those comparisons make Crystal look better than the original.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder? I dunno, anon. I don't think there's any way you can think Crystal is better than the manga or the old anime when it comes to being expressive. It just isn't. Doesn't mean you can't think Crystal is better because you prefer the style.

Anon, I so fucking agree with you. But then again, overly exaggerated, super deformed expressions doesn't equal TOTES EXPRESSIVE to me. Funny, yes, but emotional? Fuck no.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Upthread there is a pic from the manga showing Usagi surprised. She looks cute and charming and, yes, surprised!

The pic from Crystal is ... she's obviously supposed to be surprised, but woah is that thing ugly. Like from a bad hentai.

I don't see it. In fact, that manga picture looks almost exactly like the anime one. The only SLIGHT difference is the eye is a bit more centered than looking down. Other than that? Same look. Naoko was never THAT emotive either at times.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're pretty much just emoticons. They don't convey feeling, they don't look like they're actually the character's face, they're just kinda funny. So the old and new versions are tied in that department.

although the original gets points for not being too obsessed with maintaining the characters' placid 'prettiness' to do even that much.

NA I feel like Crystal is meant to not be as campy as the original and I sorta like that about it. The dialogue seemed more real to what a teenager like Usagi would sound like rather than the over-the-top 90s version. I think the direction is to be more serious knowing that their audience would most likely consist of 20-30 somethings. Honestly, if it was the old campy style I probably would not bother to watch it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It should be kind of campy though, it's Sailor Moon. I don't think it has to be as joke oriented as the original anime, but Naoko's manga definitely had some default faces here and there. And this new version had the same jokes, just not the same expressions.

And even if they don't want to go that far with the expressions, they could still do more then they are doing. There is very little to no emotion coming out of these designs, which means the voice actors are doing all the heavy lifting and it's going to be hard when things get truly emotional during important story moments.
