Is this Twelve you're talking about here? B/c if so, it is the writing. Wait till halfway in, then pick it up again. This is my plan. YMMV yada yada.

I watched the leaked Doctor Who episode. It is the first time I've felt like I might not like a Doctor. I've loved all of New Who and have been really excited for Capaldi.

But something about it just didn't work for me. No spoilers, but I'm not a fan of the direction they went. And now I'm sad that I'm no longer going to be waiting excitedly for each new Who episode and obsessively rewatching.

What direction are they taking it? I don't mind spoilers and the comments are collapsed enough so you don't have to worry about spoiling others.

What's wrong with Capaldi's Doctor?

I'm not sure quite how to put it in words. I was expecting dark, but I wasn't expecting quite such an...amoral doctor. And he doesn't seem to get along with anyone and is kind of an ass (particularly to Clara) in a way that takes it too far I think. In fact, he's such an ass that it takes a particular spoiler that I won't share in order for Clara to be willing to still travel with him. 12 doesn't earn her trust.

It is probably just personal. I can see that others will like him and maybe I'll change my mind when things get going.

Oh, that's a bit worrying. How amoral are we talking?

Well, he doesn't seem to have any problem with death. Like, people dying doesn't seem to phase him at all.

DA

Hello, Four. Don't get me wrong, Four was all about saving people (even people who were giant plants and talked through a huge seashell using other people's voiceboxes LOL) but he didn't have a whole lot of the soapy sappy "I don't wanna goooooooooooo" (oh just SHUT UP AND DIE ALREADY OK Ten) or bereaved/grieving/etc garbage the reboot has been filled with. If they are going down a more plot-driven, espisodic path with DW again, I can't wait. Enough of the soap opera, already!

I'm not sure about Classic Who since I didn't watch it yet, but I noticed that after every incarnation, the Doctor becomes such a douchebag. The same thing was with Ten and Eleven (in fact, just reading this made me think back about Eleven and how incredibly off and rude he was at first).

Awww, what a shame. :( I've been looking forward to seeing Capaldi as the Doctor but haven't seen the leaked episodes. Would you care to elaborate after a spoiler warning?

Wait, an episode leaked? How did I miss this?

I started watching Orange is the New Black and while I like it, I'm a little worried it's going to devolve into a soap opera set in prison. It already has some elements of that I don't like, but I'm not sure what I was expecting. More comedy, I guess?

Re: Recent Fandom Disappointments

I recently watched it and had mixed feelings. I watched the 1st season about a week before the 2nd season came out. I was very disappointed with the 1st season. I think, like you, I was expecting something different. I was so over Piper and her bullshit by the 3rd episode. And every time Dia came on screen I could barely watch because I hate her plotline. I'm sorry to say, but it does devolve into soap opera prison drama and Piper is its boring star. BUT I stuck it out to the end and I will say the last few episodes weren't horrible. So much so that I gave the 2nd season a shot. 2nd season is much better by comparison. The focus isn't always on Piper, which is nice. There's a lot more insights to the other characters which is what I wanted more of in the 1st season. The only problem is that while it's still prison drama (better than the petty crap in 1st season), it's very predictable. Overall, I didn't mind it. I might watch the next season if I remember about it.

I guess this could be spoilerish for Longmire....

I was disappointed to find out that in the books Walt Longmire and Vic(toria) Moretti end up in a sexual/romantic relationship. So, I'm pretty sure the tv series will follow down that path (like 99.9% sure).

But Walt and Henry Standing Bear (best friends for 38 years, according to the show) have such an awesome relationship (yes, one I can easily slash, but hey, I am what I am) that I don't want to give the show up...but I'm really not sure if I'll want to continue watching it once they give in to Walt/Vic.

I'm certainly not expecting teh gay from a western, but, well, not doing the het thing would've been a refreshing change.

OMG someone else who watches Longmire! I'm only caught up through the first season and... yeah, I suspect they were going to go the Walt/Vic route but I was really hoping they wouldn't. I like the relationship they have now and don't sense much chemistry, to be honest. Not to mention... it'd be nice to see Walt with someone his own age.

They haven't yet on the show, but realistically, what are the chances they won't? And I've sorta seen flashes of it in s2, but like you, I don't think they really have a lot of romantic chemistry plus, I mean, he's her boss. You really shouldn't shit where you eat....

I just finished semi-marathoning the first two seasons on netflix and got caught up on s3 online, so now I have to actually wait for the eps to air!

Yeah, I know. I hate it when shows do this, but it's depressingly common. :-/

Found out a few days ago that WTNV is bringing along a musical guest for all of their touring shows instead of (like I had assumed) getting local bands who had applied to do the Weather segments already to do it. Mostly this is because I was hoping they would get Doomtree again but still, I would have preferred a local act, no offense meant to the lady who's singing.

I'm sad that Zelda U will be cel-shaded rather than taking full advantage of the possible realism and detail offered by HD capabilities (and as showcased in last year's teaser).

I know I've mentioned that here before, but it's the first thing off the top of my head.

Not even disappointed by now, but I'm sad that Transformers has such a terrible film franchise. We're on our fourth movie with two more on the way, which should be a happy thing. But instead, my friends are being driven to tears in the theater by the unrelenting horribleness of the movie, and I've been reading reviews that skewer it with no small amount of fascination. I feel sorry for the people that are still involved in the movie part of fandom who have to turn to fix-it fic for relief.

Not necessarily fandom itself, but fans...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I get that people don't like movies. But when they complain and say it's crap to make others not go, it annoys me. Then again, I get more annoyed by people who let themselves be swayed by outside opinions instead of seeing for themselves. Just because Bob doesn't like it doesn't mean Jake won't like it, too.

I went through it with Godzilla and again with Transformers: Age of Extinction. I liked the movies, but I see people deciding not to go based on others saying it sucked. I won't say they were brilliant Oscar worthy movies, but hell they're enjoyable and pretty to look at.

I could see an argument against making judgments without seeing something for yourself, but there is just *so* much media available that people have to filter it somehow. Why not by word of mouth?

That rather depends.

If a friend of mine says that I will not like a movie, then they know me well enough and I know them enough, that I can trust their judgement.

If certain, but not all, critics say this movie is a huge waste of money, followed by a list of reasons, well most of those guys have been spot on before. That is the reason people read them, they watch the crap so we don't have to.

If the promo material tells a lot of really disapointing stuff and says it like it is a good thing, looking at you (no)Godzilla '14, then its a fairly easy call.

If people who have watched are coming out saying it is shit, looking at you Into Darkness, or boring and dull, back to Godzilla again, or just plain creepy and not in the good way, then its a fair judgement to take from that general buzz.

I get you want us all to watch because you are one of those "you'll love it if you see it" guys, but the world don't work that way. People are able to make judgements based on other people's reactions. In fact that is something that people should be doing more of.

I've been watching old movies this summer catching up on my backlog and I recently saw Mad Max. Admittedly I didn't know much about it. But I was so disappointed. It was not what I thought it was at all. I wasn't expecting big action since it's an older movie, but I thought it'd have more of a post-apocalyptic feel to it. The first half of the movie I didn't really understand what was going on because there wasn't much of an explanation for the state of the world. And the plot was all over the place. But I did really like the car stunts. And the ending! Talk about a let down. It's not that it was bad, it was because it was good! This was the Mad Max I was waiting for! And then it was over.

I didn't watch the sequel yet. I think that's the movie I remember seeing ads and stuff for way back when.
