How's that going? Have we determined whether it's a scam or they're just clueless? Did someone really pee in the ball pit?

I dunno, but the Ball Pit has been deflated. RIP the only entertaining part of this thing.

And someone apparently peed in it as well. It just keeps getting better/worse.

From my understanding, they had to be scamming. Hotel policy [for that chain, and more in general, as I understand it] has it so they would have been required to pay about 5 days before the event took place or they wouldn't be allowed into the space at all.

I'm imagining both. Good intentioned kids way in over their heads paired with some more sinister intentions from people that realiezed they could pull one over on that first group.

Here is some info

It is definitely THE summer fandom wank at this point. I have read so many accounts of what went down but the whole thing still seems unreal.

I actually feel sorry for the few that came out of love of the favorite tumblr sites. They didn't ask for this.

At the same time I am laughing my ass off because how many times do we see posts on our dash of, "Tumblr is like family. No, it's better than family!"
Only now, this just proves that tumblr is not perfect and flawed as anything else on this planet. I am just sad they had to learn that the hard way.

Still, what were they thinking? A tumblr themed con is a horrible idea. The only thing these people have in common is the website. No belief. No fandom. No cause. Nothing. You can have SJWs and Fox News lovers at this convention and it would be perfectly logical since anything goes on tumblr.

You know what, fuck it. I don't feel sorry for anyone who was scammed. You are an idiot if you thought this was a good idea. Especially since the con was clearly organized by people who had no prior experience on how to do these things.

Well, to play devil's advocate, the site did specify the fandom/geeky side of tumblr (with a focus on superwholock?). So there's that.

But it's still so broad and there are already so many cons out there that cover "geeky" who have many attendees who use, guess what? Tumblr.

I do feel a little bad for the younger members of fandom because they are so young, but in a way I do think it's a good lesson. I've seen so many posts talking about the world being "ageist" and how tumblr knows the real way things work, so hopefully this will leave some sort of impression on them. IDK.

On the one hand I'm like "ouch! $65!" because that is a fortune at that age. And on the other, I'm just like "good. now you'll learn to do research before you hand your money over."

DA

Yeah, I'll admit I horrible, jaded part of me is hoping that this might shake the younger ones into realizing that they don't know everything [or, at least, that maybe someone who doesn't agree isn't completely wrong and evil]. Even if I don't think it actually will.

Also, that's $65 *and* the price of room, and possibly transportation there. I mean, I get that their parents probably paid for that - but I suspect that most of them had parents that paid for the entrance fee as well.

God bless Tumblr. Bless their hearts.

Re: DashCon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a regular "bless their hearts" or a Southern "bless their hearts"? Because a Southern "bless their hearts" is definitely called here.

Is there a regular, i.e. non-loaded "bless their hearts"? Because in the upper midwest, it's used exactly the same way as the Southern version. :)

I absolutely love all the ball pit memes. But yeah, for the people who paid (not a small amount of) money to have a nice weekend with some cool con guests (almost none of which actually were present) it really sucks.

My favorite bit about the whole thing has to be the part where some people were singing "Let it go" only to have other people, complete strangers, yell at them at how Frozen is problematic.

It's like tumblr come to life. I wish I could have been there to have seen it.

How is Frozen problematic, according to them?

Can they enjoy ANYTHING? >_>

THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING(LY TERRIBLE) THING.

As more information comes out, it just gets progressively more batshit and surreal. From the inexperienced teenage organizers, to the bizarre committee system, to the "we want to sell art but we won't give the artists any money/we want guests but we won't give them any money," to the scammy fundraising and donation drives, to the people using Hunger Games signs and singing Les Mis songs, to the fact that there was a ball bit (and that someone peed in it, holy shit)... It's so unbelievable. I might not be able to accept that it was real if there wasn't photographic and video evidence.

I can't wait for someone to compile all of the stories and write something in the vein of the MsScribe Story because, shit, you know that's coming.

Re: DashCon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol yesss a full on msscribe write-up

i have a feeling this whole thing is gonna go down as one of those major fandom events everyone remembers several years down the line

and i'm pretty sure the ballpit thing is gonna be a meme

like two people who went to dashcon years ago will be arguing and then one of them will be like: "WELL IF YOU THINK YOU'RE SO TOUGH WHY DON'T YOU MEET BE IN THE BALLPIT, HUH, PUNK?"
and then there's a moment of silence and they both start laughing at each other

Well, I do know I've had one person unfollow my fandom blog because I was reblogging all the jokes about dashcon. (I think they were someone who actually went to dashcon, so...)

But can you truly blame me?

They offered a kiddie-size ballpit as compensation. You can't make this up.
