Hurting/Aching Teeth Anon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It was stress. I didn't even know that was a thing that could happen. Apparently, I had been clenching (maybe grinding) my teeth so hard while I slept that it was making them hurt all the next day (and gave me headaches). Friday night I woke up several times and everytime I was all, "Oh, I am clenching my teeth. Don't do that." And then I got a cheap night mouth guard from Walmart to wear Saturday night, no more hurt teeth! So now I gotta buy a better quality one to wear. Any suggestions from anyone who might wear them?

Try a sporting goods store, most of them will have a decent range. Its just gonna be trial and error as to which one is most comfortable for you, you might have to try a few of them.

If you want something really comfortable and you have dental coverage, talk to your dentist. They can make you a custom one that is fitted to your teeth. I have one of those. Although I've had it now for many years and it's finally starting to crack a bit in the back from all the crunching I do on it. But other than that it's been well worth it. My housemate has one of the cheap store-bought ones and comparing his to mine I'm very glad I got the one I got. (But also for me it's because I wear orthodontic retainers to sleep and I didn't want to forego my retainer to wear a mouth guard instead, and this thing also somewhat acts like a retainer.)

You can buy cheap Wal-Mart varieties that still fit to your mouth. That's the kind I use. Anon, I would highly recommend getting one you can boil and fit to your teeth if you don't already have one.

Honestly? I wear a mouth guard every night and have for a couple of years because of bruxism (probably the same thing you have, though I don't think mine stems from stress? It's just there) and the cheap ones from Wal-Mart work just fine for me. YMMV of course. Mine was causing mild TMJ with some aching and weird, gross clicking in one of my jaw joints, and it completely goes away when I'm using my night guard consistently.

Same, I just use the kind I buy at CVS and I've never had problems with them.

Funny, my jaw clicks way more when I use mine guard. It's makes it really hard to keep using it, because my jaw actually locks half open first thing in the morning.
