Maybe he's there because The Avengers want any help they can get? That makes sense to me, even if he ends up not being particularly useful. (And I love Sam but admit that he's not as powerful as most the other characters in the MCU. Same for Nat and Clint; they're awesome, but against some threats they would be outclassed. Despite that, if they want to show up and do what they can I think that's awesome, and I have no issue with them being included because I want more of them regardless.)
