Regardless of how I feel about Falcon, his existence is kind of a plot hole. Remember in Iron Man 1, when Rhodey was so incredulous about the idea of a pilot without the plane? That's basically Falcon's wings, so either they kept it so secret that Tony and by extension Rhodey didn't know about it (unlikely) or the makers of the movies are hand waving the timeline to put the invention of those wings after the Iron Man suit (also unlikely.)

I do think Falcon is awesome, but this sort of thing bothers me a lot. :/

-_-...O_O

I never thought of that.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed that the wings were a spin-off of the Iron Man suit. The Air Force did actually have Rhodey's to work off from IM2 onward. They've had years to put it into action, Sam to have his second tour where his friend died, and for Sam to have left the military. Also, since Steve and Natasha didn't know about it (and I think they'd be at least aware of a wingsuit if it had been in the press), maybe it was still in the experimental stage, with just a few of the para-rescue squads trying them out.

in the comics he's a pimp who can talk to birds

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's awesome and probably useful. I wish the movies had done something with that.

I like movie!Sam much more than comics!Falcon but yeah, he's actually a joke compared to the "real" superheroes. But I think that's why it works in the movie, it's like he's a normal person trying to do his best to help and that's much more awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he is going to be a dead normal person if he tries to go against any actual villains. Stane from Iron Man could wipe the floor with him. He'd just have to wait until he ran out of bullets and then smack him in the face.

Hawkeye is the same though. As is movie!Natacha Romanov (if I remember my comics lore, comics!Black Widows turned out to have some powers that also explained why she didn't age from the Cold War to nowadays).

And they fit just as bad into the story.

Natasha and Clint are regular people, too, yet everyone seems to accept them as Avengers. Tony, if you strip off the money and the suit, is also just this dude. It's always been a weird thing about that particular team, but they make it work.. And I sort of really like that, especially in relation to Cap's entourage, because it's really just regular people rising above themselves.

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-07-13 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never understood why some people get so hung up on power redundancies in super hero teams. The Power Rangers or the Bat family are composed of tons of people whose powers essentially amount to "fights good" with technological help and no one bats an eye, but the minute you have two fire guys on the same team everyone flips their shit.

His powers aren't what sets the Falcon apart, his persona is. He performs way more impressive flying techniques than Tony does. And he's not a smartass who's way too impressed with his own genius

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, his persona is great. His powers suck balls.

He performs way more impressive flying techniques than Tony does.
You actually think this? Like...more impressive because his technology is so terrible it amazing what he can do with it?

+1 on this

to me this logic in this secret could easily be extended to "what's the point of steve when you have the hulk who's even more indestructible?" they're all different characters with different dynamics and i think characters are more compelling than superpowers.

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-07-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, this. It's not his 'powers' it's his character and how he affects the character dynamics that makes him interesting and have a purpose(I mean Sam is probably the most well-adjusted out of all of the Marvel characters so far, and I love him for it. He's the guy that's gone through the shitter and come out on the other side okay, and that's important to see).

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-07-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed about his persona. That's enough reason to want him to be included; the powers are cool, but not everything.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-07-14 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
This. Sam is awesome, just like Natasha and Hawkeye. You don't have to be super-powered to be a hero. (And he already was, anyway.)
elaminator: (Captain America: TWS - Sam)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-07-13 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe he's there because The Avengers want any help they can get? That makes sense to me, even if he ends up not being particularly useful. (And I love Sam but admit that he's not as powerful as most the other characters in the MCU. Same for Nat and Clint; they're awesome, but against some threats they would be outclassed. Despite that, if they want to show up and do what they can I think that's awesome, and I have no issue with them being included because I want more of them regardless.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But MCU!Sam is the one who would be talking sense into the other Avengers. He'd help Tony with his anxiety attacks & help Buck & Clint with their PTSD (etc). He'd be the one helping Steve through his collection of problems. MCU!Sam is the caretaker. Falcon, yeah, he's cool & all, but it'd be super easy to shoot him, I get where you're coming from there. Sam's important though.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2014-07-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd also like to point out that of all the Avengers, Sam's the most likely to have any form of serious medical training. From what I can tell, all Pararescue guys are required to be EMT-B or higher before graduating from training. Being the designated medic may not be glamorous, but it is damn useful.

Yes, this.

I don't know what sort of diversity in powers you're looking for.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hulk - super strength and endurance, iffy control
Captain America - super strength and endurance, good with a shield
Thor - super strength and endurance, good with a magic hammer
Iron Man (in the suit) - super strength and endurance, can fly and has weapons
Black Widow - can kick ass, good undercover
Hawkeye - excellent shot, good eyes

But actually, I think they do have diversity in other ways:
Hulk - intimidating as hell
Captain America - inspiring as hell
Thor - alien as hell (with the tech and knowledge that goes with that)
Iron Man - smart and rich as hell
Black Widow - sneaky as hell
Hawkeye - snarky as hell
in which case, Falcon could be supportive as hell.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Except Sam's not there to be the hero, Sam's there to be the support. He is the person getting everyone out of sticky situations, the person getting everyone in to where they need to be. Guns and firepower are actually secondary to what he's there for. Sure, it's not a flashy main character role, but can you really see Tony settling for just being air support? Or emotional support?

Also please quit maligning comic book Sam, he was neither a pimp nor useless.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sam's...meant to be the sidekick?

Oh good, a black sidekick, that's new and different.

Well, there was one story in which he was revealed to have been a pimp before being brainwashed by the Red Skull or someone like that to be a sidekick to Cap to, I believe, betray him later. Or something like that. It hasn't been canon since pretty much the issue after it was revealed.

Frankly, I love the idea of getting him into an MCU movie other than Captain America. It will be nice to have a character that's not so wrapped up in their own mystique or stuck in their own head. I mean Jesus, when Black Widow is one of the paragons of an open and external worldview something is seriously wrong.
