Except Sam's not there to be the hero, Sam's there to be the support. He is the person getting everyone out of sticky situations, the person getting everyone in to where they need to be. Guns and firepower are actually secondary to what he's there for. Sure, it's not a flashy main character role, but can you really see Tony settling for just being air support? Or emotional support?

Also please quit maligning comic book Sam, he was neither a pimp nor useless.

Well, there was one story in which he was revealed to have been a pimp before being brainwashed by the Red Skull or someone like that to be a sidekick to Cap to, I believe, betray him later. Or something like that. It hasn't been canon since pretty much the issue after it was revealed.

Personally, I think that just because the comics page didn't use the word "pimp" doesn't mean that we can't read the visual iconography in the relevant panels. Either way, it was about retconning an idealistic social worker into a small-time crook because that the writer felt that was more realistic for a black guy.
