Doctor Who - the positive thoughts

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been getting a lot of hate, and I need to read a few good things about it so I won't feel alone about still liking this show. Although I have a feeling I might be asking for this in the wrong place, lol..

ONTD have nothing but excessive loath, and my tumblr friends are getting so overly excited that I know it hides something.

So positive thoughts about the show! Doesn't have to be what the majority of people thought was great, but what you liked!

Rory. I really liked Rory. Even at the beginning before he got to be a BAMF.

Secret #5 made me remember Gridlock is my favorite thing ever.

I adored the season 5 finale to bits and always will.

Also, I have Big Thoughts about the Fifth Doctor's arc, which amazes and impresses me more every time I think about it, even though I'm sure 90% of it was purely accidental.

S5's finale was one of my favorites for Eleven's era too! (It's also the time when I started to like him and finally stop my hate on him, so double celebration!)

I like its sprawling-ness and its ambition--like, Star Trek with its comparatively big-ass budget was (at least in the later series) making all their aliens spoon-head aliens, whereas Doctor Who's SFX often sucked but they WENT for it. Giant insects! Robots made of candy! Cat-people! Tree-people! People turning into larva with makeup made from bubble-wrap! A crystalline life-form! FUCKING GIANT PEPPER POTS WITH WISK AND PLUNGER ARMS!

(...the bit from Four's first serial 'Robot' where the guy-in-costume robot gets ""GIANT"" and there's a really bad CG of Sarah getting grabbed, then the guy in costume holding a rag doll, then a tank attack where the tank is CLEARLY a romote-controlled plastic toy...omg I never laughed so much in my life. It was amazing)

And while there's a mix of cynicism and optimism I love how in general it goes positive. (Christmas special where there's flying sharks??? The Doctor uses them to pull his sleigh?? The whole thing is a Christmas Carol take-off and it's actually really sweet???)

AND...due to its longevity and scale, I never get upset if I don't like the showrunner or how a season is going. I don't like everything Moffat is doing rn? This too shall pass, I didn't like everything the showrunner did in the later era of Four, you can wander off and come back at a different point and due to the format of the show you can like as not jump right in.

I actually liked Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, A Town Called Mercy, Rings of Akhaten, Hide, and Journey to the Center of the TARDIS for the most part.

I think my main problem with the show right now, pushing Moffat thoughts to the side, is that the constant need to be building to something (in this past season, it was Clara's "mystery") when that something is inevitably a let down, kind of tarnishes the rest of the episodes. And I'm saying that in this positive thread, because I realized I actually do like a lot of the individual eps.

I like them going on adventures and having fun times and hugging at the end of the day. Sometimes something sad happens, but it's dealt with appropriately. See: Kahler-Jex's sacrifice in A Town Called Mercy vs Amy & Rory's sudden divorce/get back together in Asylum of the Daleks. I loved the former. I cried for the former. I remembered what drew me to the show in the first place for the former.

I went "oh... okay" for the later. Call it inability to understand timey-wimey or shoddy writing, but anything that's out of order is where the series falls flat for me (River, the Patternost Gang, Clara's mystery, the plot of season six) and the stuff that's played straight is pretty damn enjoyable (most of season five, Doctor's Wife, Girl Who Waited, the God Complex, the episodes I mentioned for season seven).

TBH, my thoughts for the show are just so incredibly mixed right now. It's really hard to separate the positive from the negative. And I think I still do like it overall, just the non-Moffat episodes, so I'm looking forward to those.
