Re: Doctor Who - the positive thoughts

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I like its sprawling-ness and its ambition--like, Star Trek with its comparatively big-ass budget was (at least in the later series) making all their aliens spoon-head aliens, whereas Doctor Who's SFX often sucked but they WENT for it. Giant insects! Robots made of candy! Cat-people! Tree-people! People turning into larva with makeup made from bubble-wrap! A crystalline life-form! FUCKING GIANT PEPPER POTS WITH WISK AND PLUNGER ARMS!

(...the bit from Four's first serial 'Robot' where the guy-in-costume robot gets ""GIANT"" and there's a really bad CG of Sarah getting grabbed, then the guy in costume holding a rag doll, then a tank attack where the tank is CLEARLY a romote-controlled plastic toy...omg I never laughed so much in my life. It was amazing)

And while there's a mix of cynicism and optimism I love how in general it goes positive. (Christmas special where there's flying sharks??? The Doctor uses them to pull his sleigh?? The whole thing is a Christmas Carol take-off and it's actually really sweet???)

AND...due to its longevity and scale, I never get upset if I don't like the showrunner or how a season is going. I don't like everything Moffat is doing rn? This too shall pass, I didn't like everything the showrunner did in the later era of Four, you can wander off and come back at a different point and due to the format of the show you can like as not jump right in.
