I love this secret! Yeah, I've had some weird concepts of what shows are really like before I saw them or after only seeing an episode or part of one. I remember when Due South was on, a friend encouraged me to watch it and I didn't because I thought it just sounded like a police procedural with a gimmick ("Look at this wacky Canadian!") and I passed. I later found out it had a lot of cracky magical-realism elements to it and sounded right up my alley. By then, it was long off the air and I've never gotten around to finding a way to watch it.

As for Doctor Who, I was very familiar with the old show, but I'd lost touch with fandom and had no idea a new show had already been produced when I came into "The Empty Child" completely cold. I was really impressed. Watching S1 from the beginning was actually kind of the opposite of what you experienced, since "Rose" came off as a bit goofier than TEC/TDD to me and I was not quite expecting that, despite being well aware of the cheese that could arise on Old Who.
