Embrace the cheese, it is better than you think. SF doesn't have to be grim, gritty, or realistic, it can be as flamboyant as the best pride parade ever was. When did we start thinking that SF had to be earth based and grim (or horrible and grim at least) anyway? And I think that a spin off with the Irish cat-man would be awesome. I'd love a new space opera show.

Huh, first time I've seen "flamboyant" used for the non-gay connotation of "camp".

The cat-man would have been a better companion than black Rose.

I'm confused, are you insulting Martha as being the black-Rose because she pines over the Doctor, or Mickey because he was a complete little-girl and an adjunct to Piper's character? I'm going to imagine the latter, just because that seems more fun.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. Rose was a terrible character, Martha was pretty cool (stupid crush on the Doctor aside). Don't compare them,

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought Rose was actually okay until the second season, although abandoning her mother in the first did seem.. harsh.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, it was the Doctor that miscalculated. Rose thought she was only gone 12 hours.

abandoning her mother? obv we haven't watched the same so AND I'M GLAD ABOUT THAT.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh FFS. Martha is not Rose, asshole.

This is an adorable secret and I would actually really love an episode that returns to this episode setting and characters :)

Mostly what freaked me out about that episode was the cat-man speaking with the voice of Father Dougal. PRIESTS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE AVIATOR CATS.

Wait, THAT WAS FATHER DOUGAL??? *mindblown*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I was freaked out by the fact that the cat had a completely human wife.

And had given birth to actual kittens.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

The biology is quite simple. The human genes (or related extraction)in Catman's DNA, while paired with (allegedly) all human Lady, were still not dominant enough to be the controlling force on the offspring. However, due to the "game of chance" that is (partially)genetics, many genes can control one factor (for example height). But remember, phenotype =/= genotype. So the cat babies may in fact have more human DNA (that is recessive) in the same way the parents (whose genetic history is unclear) may have a mix of both? But who knows, the cat babies may grow to be full on cats or hybrid Catmen/ladies.

This secret is adorable and you should feel adorable.

A slight tangent, but my beloved cat died and I lost my job within two days (have since gotten a new, better job, still devastated about the cat) and was basically in the worst state ever. My SO came over to take care of me and suggested that we watch something that might cheer me up.

The episode, out of all possible TV, that I decided was most capable of distracting me during the worst possible time was "Gridlock."

And I would also like to see Brannigan the cat man return, with more kittens.

This is a wonderful secret, OP. You're gorgeous!

I love this secret! Yeah, I've had some weird concepts of what shows are really like before I saw them or after only seeing an episode or part of one. I remember when Due South was on, a friend encouraged me to watch it and I didn't because I thought it just sounded like a police procedural with a gimmick ("Look at this wacky Canadian!") and I passed. I later found out it had a lot of cracky magical-realism elements to it and sounded right up my alley. By then, it was long off the air and I've never gotten around to finding a way to watch it.

As for Doctor Who, I was very familiar with the old show, but I'd lost touch with fandom and had no idea a new show had already been produced when I came into "The Empty Child" completely cold. I was really impressed. Watching S1 from the beginning was actually kind of the opposite of what you experienced, since "Rose" came off as a bit goofier than TEC/TDD to me and I was not quite expecting that, despite being well aware of the cheese that could arise on Old Who.
