Yeah, this is pretty much why I don't answer comments unless someone is specifically asking a question or saying something that they should know I read. I don't want my feedback pages to look like "oh look this person's fic got 40 comments" and it's actually just 20 comments, and 20 of me saying "Thanks!"

I read and appreciate every nice comment, at the end of chaptered fics I often add a quick note saying thank you to all those who commented along the way/since the last chapter, and I'm pretty sure I even mention it in my profile... I just don't want to (artificially?) inflate the comment count by directly replying to each one.
