Oh yes. Blushing and shy!Steve is bad. I also hate idiot!Thor, woobie!Loki, and damsel-in-distress!Natasha.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Add, please, cold-mean-terrifying Ice Queen Natasha, the one who snaps at Steve for holding a door for her.

Ugh, I can't stand that. I find it more forgivable for fic that came out after The Avengers (kind of. It's still terrible characterization) but not for fic that was written post-Winter Solider. How could anyone come out of that movie thinking she's a steely ice queen? She was downright playful with Steve in a lot of scenes!

Exactly! But even in the Iron Man movies and Avengers, she had a sense of humor, she had some give and take. I cannot *ever* see her being so petty that she'd bitch Steve out for calling her 'Ma'm' or whatever.

It's so hard to find good Natasha characterizations.

Yes. There is so much bad Natasha characterization. Not surprising considering she's the main woman (besides various love interests, of course). But still really irritating. I love her. She's tied for my favorite with Thor. And it is so hard to find good characterization of either of them, but particularly her.

Yes! She and Thor probably get it the worst, and then Steve as the 'virgin 13 year old' or wtf ever.

I have issues with Hawkeye sometimes, too - is he some kind of wise-cracking doofus in the comics or something? Because he really comes off as combination frat boy and class clown in a lot of fics, which is baffling and irritating.

Also 'Tony is an asshole, period' irritates me, too. Maybe in the comics, but in the movies, he's actually pretty damn nice to people, just snarky.

I'm sure that story is out there somewhere. Fandom does like to turn people into cats. LOL

But, but we all know that Steve is an innocent delicate flower who has never known the- no I couldn't keep going, it's too hard to even type that with a straight face.

It's one of those thing that probably wouldn't bother me if it had been done like on occasion or something, but fandom latched onto it in a way that was truly impressive. I blame Evans and his face(I kid it's not his fault).

Re: Popular fanons you just don't get

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-07-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
It is ridiculous. He may be from the 1940s, but he's a soldier. He's a nice guy, but he's hardly going to be naive or innocent.

Re: Popular fanons you just don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how people could expect anyone to be innocent after a few weeks in the company of the Howling Commandos. Hell, a few hours oughta do it. And that's leaving aside the fact that Bucky apparently spent a significant portion of their teenage years attempting to wise Steve up in a) when and where to pick fights, and b) how to talk to girls for the love of god, you are hopeless. Even before signing up as a science experiment and fighting Nazis with a bunch of crazies, I highly doubt Steve's shyness had anything to do with innocence or a lack of knowledge.

Exactly, it really does seem to be people confusing sweet and genuinely nice guy with blushing virgin who doesn't know what sex is.

He does, and he does look startlingly young at times in the movies, which then makes me sad because I start thinking about how much he's gone through relative to his age. :(

(I think I stopped reading fic when it started getting really, really prevalent in the XMFC fandom, he have the strange ability to look really fucking young. It's disconcerting).

Charles is far from a delicate flower (there's no way you can hear people's deepest thoughts and come away from that 'innocent'), but McAvoy does have the face for it.

http://signoremorifartysayskillingspree.tumblr.com/post/88083554092/youre-such-a-pretty-girl-james (LOOK AT THAT FACE.)

What I wouldn't give to crawl out of bed looking that pretty, pale and perfect. Damn youuuuuuuuu.

Re: Popular fanons you just don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
McAvoy blushes extremely prettily. Hence sweet!Charles.

Hiddleston cries extremely prettily. Hence woobie!Loki.

I'm not actually that much of a fan of Hiddleston's acting, except for when he cries, and then he's the best actor ever. I'd love to see a crack fic where Loki cries for effect, and it works better than any of his magic.

(And on a related note, Martin Freeman is the best on-screen kisser I've ever seen. As soon as I noticed that, fandom bicycle!John Watson was just fine with me.)
