What was your experience? Did you deserve it? My roommate is in pieces right now because she was just fired, freaking out like it's a criminal record, and something you have to list on future job applications. Of course, she kind of deserved it, showed up late too often, but still.

Not fired, exactly. It's just that my contracts don't get renewed.

That or "downsized", jeez actually getting fired is preferable to just being told your being let go as part of companywide restructuring and downsizing. At least it feels more personal. Last time I was downsized they didn't even bother to tell us, just we all arrived at work one morning to find it locked up and a noticed stuck to the door.

Worst one was the firm that went bust and still owes me money.

This is why it is always better to quit when you see your severence coming down the line rather than wait until you get sacked. Sure, it always seems like the better option waiting around to collect as many paychecks as possible but when it comes to getting another job it really hurts. Better to take the hit on one fewer paycheck than get the can.

Of course I think anyone that hasn't been fired at least once hasn't really lived, and probably played it a little too safe (or just not been found out). It adds character, especially when you are young. As long as why you got fired didn't result in any accompanying criminal charges, it isn't that bad.

It sucks when it's happening, but this is my perspective on my own.

Oh agreed, especially the first time. The first time it is the worst, it is a real world ender. Especially if the first thing you are fired from was your first job ever. I think everyone should be fired from their first job (although I suspect many are) just so they know what it feels like so they can cope better down the road.

It depends on age I think. Fired at 18 feels worse than fired at 40, 'cause at 40 you kinda know what is coming and what you can do; at 18 you still have no idea what is coming so it seems so much more scarier and like a failure. Fired at 40 is way worse in terms of repercussions for your life than fired at 18 is, but with the experience and perspective adulthood brings is a lot less personally intimidating.

Never been fired (so far), and I've got plenty of character, tyvm! ;-)

But I do agree it's not the end of the world, and it can be a very valuable learning experience if you're open to learning from it. A lot of times, the more painful things in life can teach us a lot, and save a lot of grief in future, if we're willing to learn.

I know I've learned a lot more from my mistakes than my successes.

Not ever fired, thankfully. I've been laid off when an entire site of my company was closed down. It sucked.

Yes, and sort of?

Basically, I was fired because my grandmother wasn't doing too well, and I had to call in to take care of her too often. -shrugs-

I deserved it. 16 and stupid and I did something stupid, namely running around with a piece of important equipment a third party client owned and then my clumsy ass breaking that piece of equipment.

Ohhh dearrrr. That must have been mortifying.

My part-time workplace just quit giving me hours or contacting me at all.

One time the boss rang me and then she said it was an accident and she hadn't actually mean to ring me at all. Suuuuuuuper awkward.

Personally, I was kind of annoyed by that. Like, they could have at least told me they didn't want to work there anymore, but all I got was radio silence and "sorry we don't have any hours for you at the moment".

Got fired after 3 days on the line at a Quiznos. Not nearly fast enough. Had no business at that job. Although, it pissed me off because they had me come in that day and wash dishes for 2 hours before they told me I was fired.

lol that's just mean

I was fired from both my jobs, the first one for not getting along with other people. And by not getting along they meant not being friends with them? I didn't think they hated me but I was older than most of them so we didn't have much in common.

Second one for cussing when I spilled something and my bible thumping coworkers ratted me out because customers were there. They didn't hear me. BUT THEY WERE THERE. (For the record I was on my period and I got shut in the walk in fridge with no light earlier than day and I was a nervous wreck.)

Wow, fired for cussing? Good thing they've never met me. I keep a professional decorum most of the time, but I can really let loose. We were moving our office, and when things went awry, the professional movers were impressed with my potty-mouth. (Yes, I am weirdly proud of this.)

I was fired once, for the same reason as your roommate. It was not a fun experience. I was sort-of-not-really fired from a different job shortly after that for completely inane reasons that I still don't really understand - that boss was just weird.

I've been fired from almost every job i ever had.
