Noodles, that is not a leech. That is a lamprey.

Leech suckers are far less dramatic.

Actually, leeches are back in modern medicine! They are used when there's a lot of blood collecting in a small area (after limb surgery, amputations, head wounds etc.) and there's a major risk of clots forming but systemic anti-coagulants are not suitable for the patient. The doctor puts some nice clean leeches on the area, they inject their local anti-coagulant, remove the blood and then drop off when they're done.

I live in the same street as a medical leech breeder, and the tanks of leeches are pretty cool! They have to be kept in clean water so that all the mud and blood from other creatures is filtered out, so they're pretty hungry by the time they get to the patient.
