(Anonymous) 2014-07-15 02:44 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, that's what I thought too. His sexual harassment was limited to talk iirc and like you said, that's pretty much a staple of Casanova type characters. He didn't really do anything in that area that most other characters of that archtype don't do. So what makes him so bad in that area?
As for shitstirring, eh, I can't really remember the series, especially the latter half so I can't comment on that.
Re: Liking anti-heroes
I had a lot of trouble buying that he and Anri were even friends, since he came across as this creep she tolerates who won't let up on how fuckable she is (not that the show itself wouldn't get over her being tits mcgee. yes i know. anime.). Granted, I thought I would start liking Kida more when he was telling the gross teacher to get lost for creeping on her. But then he goes on to ask Mikado how erotic she is, and it's back to the annoying list.
And even outside of that, I couldn't fathom why I should care about a kid who starts a gang for no reason other than to fuck around, gets blindsided by the Littlefinger, ends up with a hurt girlfriend, bails on his gang for a year, then ends up reforming said gang, only more shittily, because he doesn't understand investigation or questions, and doesn't keep his gang in check because he's too busy moping down the street. There's a few moments where I like the friendship with Mikado, and how does want to look out for him and Anri, but he didn't accomplish much? He got manipulated (unintentionally?) into making a situation worse by fostering animosity everywhere? anime tteeeeens /blarghing
And I guess there's also the part where I can't quite pinpoint why he bothers me more than others who pull off similar actions and behaviour. He just bugs me idk.
More seriously though, I'm starting the light novels soon. I don't know how well the anime covered the first few books, but I suspect that having an ensemble cast means you crash through certain stories and plot points faster than you would having read them ("eg: wait what Namie is working for Izaya now?"). So my guess is that whatever I'm missing is probably there in the books since it might give me a different perspective on him. Or I could just read a bunch of meta.
