Why? What is the difference?

DA

It's the difference between humanely sacrificing a mouse (a la Secret 2) and becoming a vivisectioner. It surprises me that you don't see that.

I see the difference in what the act is, condescending anon. However, they both violate basic and fundamental human rights. In that, they are no different.

ayrt

It's a little like the difference between a soldier killing an enemy soldier or capturing and torturing that enemy soldier.

There are always degrees. And regarding your answer to DA - doesn't imprisonment also violate human rights?

Fair point re: imprisonment, but I guess I have a line where killing and torturing are firmly in the camp of "even being a criminal doesn't mean it's ok to do this to you". Imprisonment is only necessary for the safety of society and to provide deterrent for crime (really, mostly the former, from a practical standpoint). There isn't any benefit to death or torture; it's just a human rights violation with no gain except a sense of "justice" that's more rooted in our desire for vengeance.

...sorry, anon, I kinda went soapbox on you. ;-;

I think there are a few definite benefits to the death penalty - it makes the person no longer a threat to anyone (other prisoners, guards, etc.), it is also a deterrent (though not as much as it should be), and it is an effective bargaining chip for prosecutors (for information about other criminals, other crimes, locations of victims' bodies, etc.).

(Eh, it feel that soapbox-y to me. You feel strongly about it, there's nothing wrong with that.)

Well, there are benefits, but none of them trump "this is a fundamental human right" to me.
