Mark who?

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

Mark Oshiro, he reads and watches things he knows nothing about and writes reviews through a gender/race/sexuality lens. People can also pay $20 commission him to film himself watching things, and he sells the videos of that for 99 cents (buyers get 10 downloads of each video that they can share with other people who can't afford to buy them).

Right now he's watching Supernatural (on season five 5), Star Trek TOS (season 1 - and he's planning to watch ALL THE STAR TREK) and Farscape (season 1). You can find the reviews at markwatches.net, and there's a "black market" for extra video links http://markspoils.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-black-market.html#idc-cover.

So...people pay him to watch TV and then other people pay to watch him watching TV? Where the fuck can I get this job?

I've always wondered what this guy was into before he became popular for reacting to things. Don't get me wrong, I'm also waching ALL THE STAR TREK, and I'm posting my reactions to it too. And I usually get into things super late. But for some reason I'm picturing him as living completely under a rock as far as fandom/pop-culture goes (had he read or watched anything?) and then one day he discovered a funny thing called fandom and decided to invade it.

But this is just what I've learned from internet osmosis. Perhaps I should read and watch him and post my reactions to reading and watching him no wait that's probably already been done and isn't funny

tl;dr this guy's cult following is so weird

tbh, I'm pretty sure a lot of his "I've never seen this!" flailing is a ruse because he knows that schtick sells. Apparently the only thing he watched growing up was The X-Files. But life was horrible so he ran away and life was still horrible so he didn't watch anything else, but now it's not horrible and he does this for this a living.

That makes a lot of sense. The first part, I mean. The rest of it... well.

His cult following is attacking anyone that dares breath a word against him and calling it slander.

Heh. That's cult followings for you. I'm not super worried, if you meant that as a warning.

Oh no, it wasn't a warning more of a statement of something happening on tumblr. Sorry for being vague.

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Where's THAT happening?

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

tumblr. someone posted a warning that there were reports of mark being less than up and up and throwing some shade on the way they talked about a trans speaker. and basically a bunch of marks stans started screaming slander and witch hunt (oh and how the con was a great time and its tumblr's fault the con has a bad rep). they seem to have scared the poster into changing their tumblr name and deleting the original post.

I must not be looking in the right tumblr places, because all I find are gifs and excerpts from his Mark Watches posts when I do a tag search for him, and when I do one for dashcon, I just get the ball pit. A lot. (I'm not saying I doubt you, but I legit want to find these comments and feel like I'm not alone among a sea of squee on the left and a sea of "who?" on the right.)

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I hesitate to link simply because the original poster deleted, it was originally tagged with dashcon, and obviously doesn't want any more attention than they got (they tried changing their blog name from the looks of it too). I don't know if they were spooked by being accused of slander or if they received messages as well.

The gist of the response was the post being called slander, a witch hunt, and several women falling over themselves to talk about how nice and kind and gracious Mark was. One of the women is also apparently arguing with anons that the marriot is at fault for the 17,000 dollars and obviously lying and that anyone that didn't have fun at the con is lying or obviously didn't go.

Oh, so a self-important fan critic who's meaningless except as a meme.

He was nominated for Hugo last year, and might be again this year.

Ah, so self-important critic and big-name fan with minor recognition for blogging?

WTF people pay him to watch him watch things? From someone who watches Twitch.tv and Let's Plays I find this so strange. Donations and subscriptions are the norm, but to actually pay for a viewing is weird.
