mark oshiro on dashcon

And here mark feels the need to defend a con that made 17000 dollars disappear into thin air. I don't know what it is, but the way this guy talks about stuff always irritates me. He sounds like he'd be that guy at parties.

I don't have any particular brief for Mark Oshiro, but reading that, something like two-thirds of it is defending himself and things he did at the con from things people are saying. It's reasonable to defend yourself when people are saying things that you think are inaccurate. And for the rest of it, he's at least pretty explicit in saying it was merely his personal experience. I find his gimmick on his site a little annoying too, and he's certainly hyperbolic, but this just isn't really that bad.

True. I guess it just rankles me because if he defends Dashcon, then there are a lot of impressionable fans of his that might do the same. It's cool to be polite about things, but Dashcon doesn't need anybody to defend it.

I'm in the middle of reading this now, and clearly I'm going to have to do some research. Because I didn't know Mark was at dashcon, and I didn't give a shit about dashcon, so I didn't read any of the threads that popped up here, but WTF is up with this ball pit thing? Like what does that even mean? I guesss...there was a tiny ball pit at dashcon? Like, the ones at Chuck E. Cheez and the like? And something happened to Mark in one of them? IDEK. Nor do I know why I care.

This is the "ball pit" he's trying to defend: http://cdn0.dailydot.com/uploaded/images/original/2014/7/14/ballpit-attacked.jpg

That's...a kiddie pool with some plastic balls in it. Was a ball pit a dash con selling point?

Re: The Ball Pit

I remember seeing it when I went to get a snack, and I laughed at it because it was clearly absurdly small on purpose, and then I went about my day. It was not a point of interest, it wasn’t something a single soul talked about, and it was just a quirky thing that existed. The end.

Seriously? "It was clearly absurdly small on purpose?" Oh boy.

our trans panelist was not very up-to-date on proper terminology.

Was your trans panelist trans? Because if they were, this is kind of creeping me out, especially given that Mark is cis.

...what happened at dashcon??

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, just about everything.

Steam Powered Giraffe didn't play, and likely weren't ever even booked.

Welcome to Nightvale bailed because they weren't getting paid.

Other panelists bailed for the same reason.

Con-goers were scammed into donating $17,000 to the organizers, who told them that they'd all be kicked out of the hotel otherwise.

What???? I can't believe something like this actually happened.

That word has been co-opted by a bunch of people who don't understand the concept. It now describes people telling you you are wrong and has something to do with defending minorities.

Gaslighting is a form of mental abuse where you tell somebody something they experienced is wrong and tell them what they really experienced. It was primarily used in clinical psychological literature up untill the 2010's. It's taken from a play where a husband tries to convince a woman she is insane because she see's the gas lamps in their house flicker (he is using extra gas for a to search an attic above for the hidden jewels of the former tenant, who he murdered) and does not want to be discovered. He categorically denies her claims, to a point where it causes her to wonder if she is in fact losing it and her perceptions are too flawed to be aware.

Now it's of misused by the SJW type as an accusation against people who say things contrary to their opinions. Subjective opinions clashing aren't gaslighting.

Thank you for the description and mini psychology lesson! I read this before it popped up here, and I had a feeling that word wasn't used right. Mainly because when you pick up some newfangled terminology, you use it repeatedly like what he did.

I do think he's kind of on point about something, but his (self?)aggrandizing/condescending tone really gets on my nerves for some reason way too much for me to figure out what it might be.

Heaven forbid people actually call out a con that had shoddy management (including hiring legal minors as part of con staff, even if the 13 year old was let go from their position), mostly empty promises, failing to properly compensate guests, and super questionable tactics involving money!

Sure, some people had genuinely good times and made lemonade out of lemons. But that doesn't change the fact that it was run in a way that rivals Las Pegasus Unicon, ffs.

I read that 2-part post from someone who was on one of their committees and had screenshots to show just how much of a clusterfuck their organization and fundraising was. This thing seemed doomed from the start.

ia. His writing style reeks of whiny manchild. No adult should ever end a sentence with "...so SHUT UP".

Apparently he knows what misogyny is better than women do, which is kind of funny given his complaints about white people trying to say what racism is.

This guy again? For somebody who's all about analyzing fiction and creating deeper conversations about narrative, he takes remarkably black and white views on anything that isn't demonstrably marginalized enough for his liking. Like, to the point of literally being confused that somebody else could have problems, too.

The idea that dashcon may not have been as awful as described (although obviously terribly miss-managed from a financial and guest-booking angle) but rather the terribleness has been exaggerated by tumblr users themselves really amuses me. Whoever said this was tumblr eating itself from the inside was right.

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

I have a friend who went because she lives in the area and she assured me that yes, it was every bit as awful as described.

Mark who?

Re: mark oshiro on dashcon

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Mark Oshiro, he reads and watches things he knows nothing about and writes reviews through a gender/race/sexuality lens. People can also pay $20 commission him to film himself watching things, and he sells the videos of that for 99 cents (buyers get 10 downloads of each video that they can share with other people who can't afford to buy them).

Right now he's watching Supernatural (on season five 5), Star Trek TOS (season 1 - and he's planning to watch ALL THE STAR TREK) and Farscape (season 1). You can find the reviews at markwatches.net, and there's a "black market" for extra video links http://markspoils.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-black-market.html#idc-cover.
