diabetic aon, checking in (now with shiny username)
But whatever. It is what it is. They finally got me set up with a glucometer and testing supplies, which I'm supposed to use a few times a week. My very first fasting glucose that I did all by myself was 92...which I thought was supposed to be pretty good?

That, or she actually just wanted to give you "good news" with the numbers.
Either way, it seems like you're doing well. The glucometer will really help, and possibly give you a sense of control about monitoring how you're doing. Good luck!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)1) it's a very common, very treatable condition that is not life threatening when managed properly
2) if you have type 2 diabetes, it's reversible!
So... yeah. I'm not saying you've no right to be upset, but a little more perspective might be helpful in this situation. You'll be getting regular appointments for a while because they want to test your A1C to figure out if meds are needed and if so, what dosage works for you. They're not really meant to be new epiphanies, just follow-ups and keeping tabs on your blood sugar levels, which is absolutely what needs to be done, especially in the early stages.

2) if you have type 2 diabetes, it's reversible!
1) I'm aware. But that doesn't mean I wanted to have it or that I expected to have it this early in life.
2) That's debatable.
Re: diabetic aon, checking in (now with shiny username)
(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)2) Not... really? When I say reversible, I don't mean for everyone. But in the sense that you won't need to be so diligent about blood tests, glucose tests and medication, it's entirely possible to change your lifestyle enough where that can happen.
But-- and I've noticed this since the very beginning when you discussed it as an anon in the GC, your mindset (that strong negative "OH SHIT I'M DOOMED" reaction) to the diagnosis has been pretty fatalistic. Fatalistic enough that I, a total stranger, find it a little worrisome. Especially the part where you're blaming the doctors for not telling you more on your first A1C test because then maybe you would've worked harder and you wouldn't have gotten an official diagnosis of diabetes. You seemed to be under the impression that this was your one and only shot to avoid it, and that's not in keeping with reality. You can crack down, work hard and your A1C can improve at any time. There's no magical expiration date on working on this.
You don't have to be an annoying Pollyanna about this, but treating diabetes like it's totally hopeless is a non starter.
Re: diabetic aon, checking in (now with shiny username)
Where I get upset is the idea that, while probably not preventable, it was delayable with better actions on my part. So in that regard, I'm disappointed in myself. And am I upset that I didn't feel like anyone was really helping me get going in the right direction? Yes. But again, the root of it is on me, for not taking my own initiative when it became clear the only preventive advice my doctor was giving was, verbatim, "watch your carbs and exercise."
And that's upsetting. Maybe not for you, and that's great, but for me? It is.
EDIT: To be clear, the upsetting part about "people misunderstand!" is not that "people just don't get it." It's that I apparently can't make myself clear enough.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)If after all that a person still bursts into tears and continues to question whether or not this is something they're stuck with for life and if ONLY their doctors had told them sooner they could've done something about it (with the strong implication that they've missed out on that opportunity had they but realized)... well. Okay then. :(
Re: diabetic aon, checking in (now with shiny username)
Anyway, I do understand you being upset. Being upset about this kind of thing is natural, especially since you've only recently found out about it. Diabetes is manageable though and so I also get why the nurse would tell you so; she probably didn't want you getting the impression that you couldn't be healthy or would always be struggling with this. And, well, I guess considering on how you deal with it you could be (my dad still does at times and he's been a diabetic for many, many years), but it's something you just have to adjust to. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.
Good luck, and I hope you feel better!
