AU is supposed to be about timelines where some of the stuff from the canon didn't happen, though. I don't see why it couldn't make perfect sense in some AU that Bucky didn't have that level of trauma or didn't lose his arm. You're totally entitled to prefer AU where he DID, your taste in fic is your own, but it's not necessarily OOC if he didn't.

Devil's advocate: I...can sort of see what OP means, I think. I think the whole Winter Soldier thing is a huge thing in Bucky's character arc. I mean, undo that you either have a younger version of Bucky or a guy who had a very different life, and therefore is very different. So I can understand how it would feel OOC.

You mean the Bucky we see at the start of First Avenger? When you undo WS, you just get Bucky's original personality.

Yes, but that Bucky was already changed in First Avenger, too. Firstly by living the reality of war, and secondly by being captured and experimented on. Even if he had not fallen from that train, he'd still not be the same Bucky.

I'm pretty sure I've seen AU's where he still goes to war in some capacity (Iraq, Afghanistan, whatever) and he's still pretty much unchanged. I realize that that is a very specific sort of AU, but I remember it sort of rubbing me the wrong way, too, as I just don't buy that that wouldn't change you.

The Bucky we see at the very start of FA seems pretty well put together and charming despite the war, and that's the basic blueprint of his personality (charming, cool, jokey, and adoring Steve). Writing him as he is prior to all the shit that happens to him is entirely reasonable to me. The thing about Bucky and Steve is that there are several different kinds of them and one is not more "fundamentally OOC" than the other, as OP seems to think.

True, though that sort of goes for the entire Marvel universe if you think about it. But people do get attached to certain portrayals.
