I feel horrifically self conscious about my cellulite. I've been gaining weight steadily despite all attempts to stop it (I'm not pregnant, I have been eating normally and working out, too - I'm 5'4 and can be anywhere from 134-138 lbs, it can vary by day). It's to the point now where I feel embarrassed to go out in public, as it's summer, and I can either wear board shorts and cook, or wear shorter shorts and have the back of my thighs dimple every time I take a step.

No one is staring at the back of your thighs looking for dimples.

Have you tried wearing lightweight skirts instead of shorts? A skirt made of very light, thin fabric can go down to your knees or farther and still not get hot.

Yes, this! A skirt practically creates its own breeze. I actually hate to wear any kind of pants in the summer if I can avoid it. Also, something about summer makes me want to wear pretty dresses!

Don't want to be alarmist, but if you're gaining weight for mysterious reasons even though you're eating normally (and you weren't before) you might want to visit a doctor.

I know that doesn't help with the cellulite thing, though. Take comfort in this: most people have cellulite, and most other people do not care. If you're truly self-conscious there's plenty of cute summer outfits that are not so revealing.: maxi dresses, summery skirts, loose-fitting pants in light fabrics.

That being said, I have waaaay more excess weight than you, and will still wear a bikini when I swim, because fuck it, it's summer and I want to be in the water.

Is the difference between board shorts and shorter shorts really that huge, though? As a person with, shall we say, a generous amount of thigh, my shorts end a couple inches or so above the knee. I choose lightweight, breathable fabrics. Cotton, linen or blends of the two are best, IMO. Ditto for shirts. Not too tight, either-- you want plenty of room for air circulation. A friend swears by skirts, again light, breathable fabrics and flowing cut.

It depends on how old you are, but sudden unexplained weight gain is a perfectly legit thing to bring up with your doctor. You might be having metabolism issues that come with age, or metabolism issues linked to something else.

Maybe you should look at what you are eating? I am getting older (late twenties) and noticed that I can't eat the same kinds of foods in the same amounts that I used to when I was younger even when working out. I'm almost exactly the same height and weight as you and have been struggling to lose weight.

What does work for me is eating (or trying to eat) non-processed food of any sort, at least one salad a day (I don't eat dressing if I can help it) and fresh fruits on a regular basis if not daily. My main problem is disciplining myself to stick to this as well as doing more walking/running. I noticed when i spoke to other people that the more consistent you are, they better your results will be.

Adding in that a lot of people don't realize that you can actually gain weight from not eating enough. If your body isn't getting enough of the nutrients that it needs, it will kick into starvation mode and slow down your metabolism because it thinks that you're starving.

You need to make sure that you get enough protein and fat in your diet, especially so if you're trying to watch what you eat.

Cellulite is a fact of life for the majority of non-photoshopped women, anon. It's perfectly normal, and losing weight isn't likely to make it disappear. I'd honestly suggest learning to accept it for what it is and learn to live with it.

On the other hand, if you've been experiencing unexplainable weight gain, you may want to consider seeing a doctor about it.
