Right, but... which KIND of dick is what's the problem. Yeah, God is awful to a lot of people, but always because he's really strict and horrible about his rules, even when they seem unfair. Being capriciously awful to someone based on a bet? That doesn't sound like the same character.

Like, okay, Cyclops is always kind of a dick in X-Men, right? But he's a dick in that he's uptight and really harsh on other people and is physically incapable of unclenching his buttcheeks. So suppose there's one issue, and only one issue, where Cyclops is being a dick to people by saying, "Whatever, caring about stuff is gay, you go do whatever, I'm just going to watch TV." You'd say that issue was weird and out of character. (Or that Cyclops is being mind-controlled or replaced by a shapeshifter, but that's X-Men for you.)

I suppose the actions are inconsistent with his usual ones.

But if God ever woke up one day and was like, "wait, do these humans actually give a shit about me, or do I have to make them PROVE it?" I could see him doing something nuts.

It's not actually the devil he makes a bet with, though, from what I've read. It does say "Satan" but supposedly that can also just mean "accuser." (OT God probably would've smote his ass or invited a new warrior to punish him, but I like to think this was a step to self-awareness, and he just handled it very badly.)
