I took the Oath straight from that book, hoping that it would draw the Manual to me. Like how Dari took the Oath from Nina's copy and then it downloaded itself onto her computer. And I was thrilled when I first read about how Irish wizards don't even have books, they just get all the information from the magical residue around Ireland. And I used to say Dai to wild animals, hoping they would trust me...

I can't believe I'm saying this logged in.

They're the "Young Wizards" series by Diane Duane. The first one is called "So You Want to Be A Wizard" and they're up to 8 books now.

Then I'll admit something even more embarrassing: I was convinced that the novel had come to me in the way the Manual is supposed to, because I was babysitting for a family (the only time I ever sat for this family, btw), the kids had just gone to bed, and it was just sort of lying there, but a bit out of the way-- like, it shouldn't have drawn my attention, but it did.

Y'know, that happened to me, actually - I was in this children's bookstore in my grandmother's town that I'd never set foot in before or since. And it wasn't like it was a big book, either, compared with some YA books, but I just saw it and it... it interested me. Drew me, maybe. So I picked it up, read the back, bought it...

...And I've been screwed ever since. Totally and completely.
