Normal titans will attack titan shifters.
I stopped watching halfway through so I don't know more.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)It's looking that a lot or all of the titans are humans that have been turned into titans. Titan shifters are people who can change into titans by inflicting wounds on themselves and focusing. There are two kinds so far. First is Eren, the protagonist, who started out human and it's implied his father did something to turn him into a shifter.
Second is Ymir, who started out as a titan, wandering outside the walls and eating people for 90 years until she ate a shifter - who was Anne, Berthold and Reiner's (the 3 other shifters in the series) friend. The ability to shift, and possibly other abilities, can be transferred by eating the one that has it.
How those other three and their devoured friend became shifters is unknown at this point, but is likely connected to the village they were trying to take Eren to.
The ability to shift seems to be precarious though. As demonstrated by Eren, if you push it too far or loose control your body starts to fuse and disappear into the titan body until there is no human body at the nape of the neck and their intelligence drops to a normal titan's. Supposedly the reason titans can be killed by destroying the nape of the neck is because the essential core nerve center, ect., that is from the human they started as is located there.
There's also an enormous talking monkey-titan thing that can make titans move around at night (they're usually dormant in the dark) that hasn't been explained. This series is full of loose ends and questions and it doesn't look like anything will be answered for a long while so any of this could be proven wrong in a future chapter.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)Also: Eren is always the protagonist, though a few times when he's shifted he's been more titan and attacked people. He's always working for the good and freedom of mankind.
Anne, Berthold and Reiner are the three titans behind the collapse of the first two walls and the attempted kidnapping of Eren, their reasons are unknown other than that they were working under someone else's orders, someone they seem very afraid of. They don't care much about humans but are very loyal to eachother.
Ymir seems to just be working for herself, but seems to have a genuine caring for humans, particularly Crista. At first she was alone, then she cooperated with Berthold and Reiner, then she betrayed them to save Christa.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 02:15 am (UTC)(link)thanks for this answer! (hopefully you're still around because i have more questions) is it common knowledge to everyone that these few are shifters? are the four not trusted because they seem to have secret motivations? as i've never gotten into snk, i thought all of the characters were human and on the "good side" but does this mean the shifter characters are eren's (and everyone else's?) enemies?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)Anne got caught after turning into a titan inside the walls trying to capture Eren, but few people actually knew it was her as the officers there hid her away as a prisoner and covered it up by letting people think she'd just been a human killed in the attack. She's currently in some sort of stasis encased in a large chunk of "titan hardening", which she'd previously used in her titan form to prevent injury.
I believe only the people in the scouting division that went on the mission to rescue Eren and a few higher ups know about Berthold and Reiner being shifters. They're currently outside the walls, possibly dead.
As for Ymir, I think only the cast of named characters fighting with and for Eren know about her. She hasn't been seen since helping to save Christa.
Basically, Eren is 'good' and all the other shifters are 'bad' except for Ymir who is sort of neutral. Everyone else is human that we know of, but being human doesn't mean they're good. There are a lot of conspiracies, coverups, assassinations and dirty politics going on inside the walls, so humanity definitely isn't all good. But as we still don't know what's going on outside the walls, what titans are or where they came from, why and for whom Anne, Berthold and Reiner were trying to take Eren, the truth of the walls and the religion around them, or what's going on with the royal family, it's hard to say who's right or wrong.
