well, you described the difference yourself.
the writers shifting the "pain" and the screen time on the guy on expense of female is manpain. Making an arc about e.g losing a child all about the pain of the father, while leaving out the realistic reaction of the mother, is manpain.


A guy reacting realistically is NOT manpain.
it's annoying when it gets used otherwise, but manpain is still more annoying.

Why would that second one be manpain? If the main character is the father (or the arc is about him), there is no obligation whatsoever to bring up other characters.

I agree. I mean sure, if you actively SHOW the mother and she's not having any emotions, well maybe. But if the mother s not a important character...why should their reaction be relevant.

"while leaving out the realistic reaction of the mother" is kinda the crucial point here, not how much she is showing. if it's ALL about the guy, even the pain of others ("I'm so hurt over hurting you that it's all about me") that's manpain.

This. If the story is told through the eyes of a particular character, then of course the focus will be on how events affect them rather than other characters.
