That is the exact opposite of what "manpain" is.

Manpain usually refers to male characters who, despite any amount of constant terrible things they do, are portrayed positively by the canon and have all of their actions justified simply because they're sad and have sad backstories and that girl turned him down that one time.

It does not refer to male characters who show emotions.

What? I have NEVER heard that definition of manpain. Manpain is what people call it when men have excessive or over the top emotional pain.

The closest part of that that is anything like your statement is " It is also used to excuse a range of behaviors that often include actions that would otherwise be read as unsympathetically selfish, anti-social or violent." Which has nothing to do with making a char seem positive.

Why can't it mean both?

Manpain is used almost exclusively in my fandom circles to describe the dudes that get their actions excused 24/7 because they have angst. (Meanwhile, the female love interests are the ones getting endless amounts of shit for showing emotion and upsetting the precious man.)

Yet, I have often heard it used for characters that actually suffer for genuine reasons. So I'm thinking that, even if that was the original meaning, it has moved way beyond that.

That's always going to happen in any situation, no matter what.

People use words that mean something completely different and then it becomes a hot mess. Re: basically any singular word used to describe a concept especially in fandom/social situations.
