He really did, but then again, it wss John Hurt so they didn't have a chance in hell of outshining him. He was the best thing about that special.

The odds were sort of stacked against Tennant and Smith.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was the best thing about the special, though. I think it was well-done overall, although I understand the issues people have with it.

They really were.

While I have some issues with the special and War Doctor, I liked it well enough. But for me, John Hurt was the absolute best thing about it. Biased though because I love that man.
