I hated Ten at first, because I loved Nine so much. But over time, he grew on me, and now I view him very fondly.
I loved Eleven at first; his appearance/performance in 'The Eleventh Hour' is very, very strong. As time went on, I didn't...come to dislike him, so much, as come to see him as representing an era that, overall, I dislike.
And I disagree with you about the 50th special. I enjoyed all three of the Doctors, but Hurt far and away outshone the other two.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was the best thing about the special, though. I think it was well-done overall, although I understand the issues people have with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)While I have some issues with the special and War Doctor, I liked it well enough. But for me, John Hurt was the absolute best thing about it. Biased though because I love that man.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:26 am (UTC)(link)This has nothing to do with John Hurt who is a great actor: but he just didn't make sense in this role. He throws off the numbering in a way that makes no sense: I already hated the whole Tenth regenerating into himself.
And should that little trick have that thrown off the numbering too? Seriously, the cycle is not 13 anymore, now it's 15? It's like TPTB have never heard of consistency... I know it's nit picking, but they are the ones who insisted on all these stupid details that make no sense and then trample all over their own continuity: they just do not respect the internal consistency of their own show or the viewers' intelligence, which makes it hard to care for the show and the characters.

Basically Moffat basically turned one whole life into a Noodle Incident and sacrificed another to retcon just so he could play with the drama of "Oh! The Doctor is dying and this time it's his last!".

That Moffat acknowledged them at all is a giant nod toward the idea of continuity.
(And we can just not talk about the Valeyard.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)Really, really wanted to like 11 and first few episodes I did but ... gosh writers have failed the actor. 10 was an unstable egomaniac in the end but 11 became this plus very ignorant. Dunno, but it might have been the effect of cutting off the whole character network? We had few cameos, but in the last seasons, Doctor had been more involved with everyone - this time we had Rory's dad and Random Kids.
