I started out liking Eleven well enough in series 5, but yeeeah, I grew to kinda hate him as the writing for him got worse and as Matt gave more interviews that made him seem kinda bro-ish.

Matt gave more interviews that made him seem kinda bro-ish.

Eh?

Not the OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I grew to kinda hate him as the writing for him got worse That is exactly how I felt about David Tennant: I didn't mind him at first, but as the writing got worse, I began to hate the Tenth Doctor and eventually couldn't stand DT's acting, his ticks and mannerisms... In contrast, I didn't mind Matt Smith at first and he kind of grew on me as an actor and Eleven as a character in spite of the problematic writing.

I guess tastes differ... Oh well.

PS: I was all set to hate Peter Capaldi's version (I respect him as an actor, but I just couldn't buy him as Doctor Who and I felt Eleven's regeneration scene was not a good introduction for the new Doctor) until I saw the preview that aired a couple of days ago?

Now I am afraid I will love this new version of the Doctor in spite of my regret for Eleven and assuming I was done with this fandom. :(

I still cannot stand the Tenth Doctor, though and -possibly unfairly- have judged David Tennant to be a rubbish actor.

Ooops: not ticks, I guess I meant tics (and possibly tricks, thus the ticks mis-spelling? Er.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well most regenerations start off a bit rough. Early installment weirdness of a sort.

I agrer that Matt does some great stuff! I love seeing different Doctors interact.

I wish 9 had gotten a longer run. I love him the most.

I love them all, but yeah, I wish 9 had gotten a longer run.

9 was awesome! And the plots were nice.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! His doctor was a perfect blend of comical and serious.

People say Ten outshone Matt because they are rabid Moffat-haters who already had their narrative and complaints worked out before it even aired. Same with Capaldi's episodes, I guarantee the usual suspects will be decrying it, simply because they want to decry it. You cannot get them to go against their own personal narrative.

Eh. As far as Tennant outshining Smith goes, I'd say that's definitely the case with some people, but not with all. Everyone's got a favorite doctor, and everyone has blind spots when it comes to him, whoever he might be.

As far as Capaldi goes, I think you're dead on. But it's not just a Moffat thing; it's a "but I liked it this way" thing. A lot of people cannot accept that the doctor changes (and I'll admit that I've fallen into this trap. I had trouble accepting Ten).

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
This comment completely disoriented me because I'm so used to the accusation being "You only hate Moffat because you're a ~Tenvian~ and are still hung up on Ten/Rose!". The opposite accusation is a bit surreal: that I only prefer Ten because I hate Moffat. Maybe it's BOTH. I'm not sure how that'd work, but going on Moffat logic, it's probably a time loop.

I'm opposite from you.

I hated Ten at first, because I loved Nine so much. But over time, he grew on me, and now I view him very fondly.

I loved Eleven at first; his appearance/performance in 'The Eleventh Hour' is very, very strong. As time went on, I didn't...come to dislike him, so much, as come to see him as representing an era that, overall, I dislike.

And I disagree with you about the 50th special. I enjoyed all three of the Doctors, but Hurt far and away outshone the other two.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He really did, but then again, it wss John Hurt so they didn't have a chance in hell of outshining him. He was the best thing about that special.

Same here, I loved 9 from the very beginning and couldn't get used to 10 at all until season 3 and then I had even appreciated older episodes.

Really, really wanted to like 11 and first few episodes I did but ... gosh writers have failed the actor. 10 was an unstable egomaniac in the end but 11 became this plus very ignorant. Dunno, but it might have been the effect of cutting off the whole character network? We had few cameos, but in the last seasons, Doctor had been more involved with everyone - this time we had Rory's dad and Random Kids.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-07-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean you don't have the least fave Doctor? How about, idk, Two or Five? I like Five, but eps dragged on forever. Or Four? I think the most disliked Doctor is Six.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP - but for me, personally, I try to distinguish between the Doctor and the scripts the Doctor got. Like you, I enjoy Five, and it's not Peter Davison's fault that the scripts during his era are slow as hell and frequently boring. Then again I might only be saying this because I love Peter Davison as an actor and want to watch him forever in everything

Isn't Four the most universally beloved of the classic Doctors?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-07-17 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
...why on earth do you need a least favorite Doctor?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I feel Ten had the least emotional role in the 50th, so I think Eleven and Hurt Doctor did better simply because they had more to do.

Also, I feel like Ten is a character that stands better with a companion to be...Ten with, and he had no real companion present.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering they set Ten post WOM and pre EOT, lack of companion is, sadly, understandable.
