I was also initially excited about a (almost) canon lesbian relationship, but reading the manga...I don't like either of the characters. :( I suppose that's just the way the manga is going, that everyone is a horrible person in some way, but I find they're among the ones I dislike more than most and don't even want to read the parts of the chapters with them (well, Christa at least since she's the only one still showing up) anymore.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too.

I don't like Ymir and Christa is just so fucking boring that I can't bring myself to like her either. Then again, outside of maybe Hange and Annie, I don't like any of the huma/titan shifters.

I'm more interested in the mysteries, conspiracies, and Beast Titan than any of the other characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt. Agreed. Most of the characters are too unlikeable or like Christa too boring to take interest in. I don't think the author is all that good at writing characters. He has really good ideas for conspiracies and that's what is really shining and moving the story along, though I wish we'd get shown things more linearly. The flashbacks to show the planning and motives after the action happens and the jumping to other scenes in the middle makes it harder to follow than necessary sometimes.

And yes, I've been wondering what the hell that Beast Titan was since it showed up. I think that's the most intriguing mystery so far.

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one. He really isn't all that good when it comes to writibg characters, is he? Most of them are pretty one dimensional from what I've seen so far in the manga. He really does shine when it comes to tthe mysteries abd conspiracies surrounding the titans. Ugh, don't get me started on the flashbacks. One thing the anime did better was that it showed Eren and company's training in the first couple of episodes. Instead of going to the action and then doing flashbacks for a couple of chapters.

Me too! That and that mystery woman who can apparently manipulate memories. Beast Titan is the best character in the series imo.

I'm beginning to think people who think Christa is boring are really shallow and think only crazy or evil characters are interesting. Good job confirming that with being a fan of Hange and Annie.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

I said maybe Annie and Hange. And no, I don't think they're somewhat interesting because they're crazy or evil. They're just the only characters I've encountered so far that I didn't want to stangle or roll my eyes at.

And so what if I'm shallow? Christa is just boring to me and she isn't the only character I feel that way about.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
How do you even continue reading the manga if you want to strangle all the characters? Annie and Hange don't even show up that often.

It must be hard for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

I don't want to strangle all of them. Just a few so it isn't that hard tbh. It was a bit hard during my binge reading of the series but now that I'm caught up, that won't be an issue. It's a monthly series so it isn't a big deal.

I'm in it for the mysteries and cospiracies involving the titans, wall, etc. There's enough tantalizing tidbits dangled in front of my face to keep me interested. The action also helps.

I'm beginning to suspect people who like Crista are boring and shallow.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Nice comeback.
You sure showed him.

What am I way off?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm boring and shallow yet don't like Christa. What now? Where do I fit in? I feel left out.

Do you love Reiner and Bertolt because they're next on the list.

Actually wait no.

Do you ship Eren/Levi.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Don't like any of those characters tbh. So no, I don't ship Levi/Eren. Don't ship anything in this series.

What now?

A+ Someone get this guy a beer.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Your approval is strangely flattering. Thank you. :3

On topic, it kinda boggles my mind how popular Bertholdt and Reiner are. Then again, this is the same fandom that is enamored with a nobody like Marco so I shouldn't be too surprised.

Or a cardboard cutout like Levi. Without his dumb short gimmick he would be completely un-noteworthy, but no, now I gotta see him and his dumb haircut plastered everywhere. Someone get me a beer.

Though I'm sure you aren't as shallow and boring as you say anon. I mean you said it yourself, you don't like Crista.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get the Levi love. I guess if I squint, he's kind of attractive? And he is kinda badass, but he's a generic badass. Those types of characters are a dime a dozen these days. Nothing about him sets him apart from countless characters like him. His character is as dull as ditchwater, so I can't bring myself to like him.

And Eren is just grating. So I'm just boggled by how popular Levi/Eren is. Don't get me started o Mikasa.

Unfortunately, I am. But thank you. :)

He really comes across like the kind of character an editor wanted made for trope/merchandise purposes. He's so out of place with the world in his current form. Why is he here.

I also struggle with actually liking Eren but I can stand him. He gets the job done. Also I like what he represents as part of the story. Honestly I had a hard time liking the entire main three until I watched:

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/ir/jo/jar/42650-attack-on-titan-in-depth-analysis

And I appreciate them more now, even though they aren't my personal favorites.

I'm baffled by the love for the villains in this series though, and find the grimdark fanart and discussion surrounding them to be comically melodramatic sometimes. Poor, poor murderers.

What's your problem with Mikasa? She's tough for me, because what Isayama was trying to do with her is so obvious but in the currently limited portrayals of female characters in shounen, she both does and does not work. She is an inverse of the overpowered male character who vows to protect a weaker female character, especially noteworthy because Eren is the main man, but at the end of the day she is still a female character who's world revolves around a male, and she even might have a crush on him which is so unnecessary. Also outside of her complex surrounding Eren, she's kind of barren as a character. I used to just think she was boring but now I don't know what to make of her. She just is what she is.

Well if you say so. But I doubt you're any more boring than most people. You think I do something interesting in between comments here? Nah. I stare at the fly on the wall that stopped moving an hour ago. Is this the price one pays for being immensely interesting? Hard to tell.

tl;dr

There's like one paragraph with five sentences. I'm sure you can do it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for the late response, I went to bed after my last reply. And for what it's worth, the above anon with the tl;dr reply wasn't me.

I'm not sure if I'd got so far to say that Levi is out of place in the world, but he does seem like he was put in there for the sake of having a character like him. I liked his squad more than I liked Levih himself.

Thanks for the link! I will give it a watch later tonight. Hopefully it might give me a new way at looking at the main three. I like what Eren represents, but he's an annoying hothead. Oh yeah, I don't get the love for Reiner and Bertolt. Like, I'm supposed to feel sorry for you that you caused the death of countless people just so you could retrieve the coordinate and get home? Dude, one of you is the fucking Colossal Titan, I'm sure you could have made it home somehow without pulling that shit. You had options.

You've basically summed up my problem with Mikasa. I heard how badass she was and how the damsel in distress roles were reversed with her and Eren, so I was super excited to see that. But she has no character of her own or interests outside of Eren. And she's as interesting as a plank of wood because of it.
