Eh, I think you went a little far here, but I understand the sentiment. I'm sure you're still a real gamer if you didn't go out and buy a PS4 or Xbone at launch, or your library is a couple of years behind, but... if the last game you played was Super Mario World and the last system you owned was a SNES in the fourth grade... or the last PC game you bothered with was Starcraft in middle school... yeah, you're not a gamer anymore, bro. Maybe you were one, once. You sure ain't now.

What if you still actively play them on a regular basis? Because yeah, if the last time you played a game was "in the fourth grade" or "in middle school," and you haven't touched it since, you're not a gamer anymore. But if you've still got your SNES hooked up and play it every other weekend, or have Starcraft installed on your current laptop and stay up till 3am on Friday nights playing it, I'd say you still get to be a real gamer.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I'm definitely in the "if you play games you're a gamer" camp, but a lot of people include themselves in that label who only played games. They don't play them now. It's a strange identity thing, and contrary to cultural mythology I've found it's a lot more common among men to cling to the gamer label when they haven't picked up a controller in ten years than it is for women.

Source: the sheer number of men I've talked to who when asked responded "yeah, I'm a gamer"... who don't actually play video games anymore.

Yeah, that makes sense; if somebody hasn't played any sort of game (old or new) in ages and has no intention of starting up again anytime soon, I'd question their calling themselves a gamer too.
