What about that Malaysia airplane crash? Apparently it was shot down. Russia is blaming Ukraine. Ukraine (and I think everyone is thinking it) is blaming Russia.

I think it is traumatizing enough for the families of the casualties without having the news cycle grind it into the ground as an excuse for a war like they are doing (and horrifyingly, I've heard some people saying that they deserved it just for being mostly Muslim) or to justify some pet conspiracy theory. Hearts and prayers to the bereaved.

Agreed. It's also silly to assume that all the passengers were Muslim. That may be Malaysia's state religion, but a significant percentage of the population aren't Malay. A little over 20% of the population is Chinese, most of whom identify as Buddhist. The predominant religion of non-Malays is Christianity.

Main reason would be that it was a plane going from Amsterdam. Pretty good chance a lot of those were tourists/business people.

They weren't. The plain left in Amsterdam and 154 Dutch died in the crash (it's all over my Facebook). Sure, some of them might have been Muslim, but the majority weren't. It's a stupid assumption in the first place, and secondly it's just horrible to say you'd deserve death because of your religion.

The news could definitely be more sensitive about this. But if there was ever a time for this to be shouted about, it's now.

The families deserve to know what happened, and the responsibility needs to be established as quickly as possible. Then maybe there will be some hope of nipping more rising tensions in the bud before it spirals into outright war.

Apparently Israel has started a ground invasion in the Gaza Strip. You'd think with the history Jewish people share, they would be less prone to slaughtering people for stupid reasons.

This isn't a child beaten by a parent who has no idea how to properly release its anger.

This is a country of people (many of whom have not been directly affected by Antisemitic events) who are bombing and murdering civilians because they want a bit more land they think they are entitled to.

Russia had an anti fly zone around where they got shot down. Oh, and Russian news is making shit up like Ukrainians crucified a teenage boy and dragged his mother around by a tank until she died and shit like that. It was most likely Russia.

Ukraine's been receiving covert arms from the CIA, and the rebels have been receiving arms from Russia, and both sides have been popping off missiles at jets suspected of belonging to the "other side", some asshole finally got lucky and finally hit something. Only it wasn't a military jet, it was an airliner.

It could have been either side, the rebels are more motivated but the Ukrainian armed forces have been trying to shoot down what they call "Russian" jets for a while. Frankly it doesn't matter in the end which set of assholes it was, what the region needs is less egos with weapons attached to them showing up, and more sitting around a table hammering out a plan (which will almost certainly require peace keeping forces, and very probably some form of autonomy at the very least for the region because the grievances of the rebels are real ones). However, with the amount of ego wrapped up on both sides -Putin wants to prove to the US that the days of pushing post-Soviet Russia around are now over, and Obama wants to prove that post-Iraq America is not militarily weakened by the war on rhetoric; and who are both pushing their regional proxies- mean that what they will get is less talking and more saber rattling.

In the meantime 298 innocent people just got diced in the crossfire.

Frankly I'll add on a ounce or two of blame to whatever corporate shill thought that routing air traffic through an active warzone was worth doing to save a few bucks in fuel and maintenance air miles.

I'm more sad about the Moscow subway accident.
Crashes are always hard to read about and they're part of the reason I don't follow news. On topic: bollocks and everybody lies.

There were 154 Dutch passengers on board the plane, says an airport official, and 27 Australians, 38 Malaysians, 11 from Indonesia, 6 UK, 4 Germans, 4 Belgians, 3 from the Philippines and 1 Canadian. Unknown nationalities have yet to be verified.

It's so tragic. I feel terrible for the people who were in the plane and for their family and friends who had to find out that they lost someone they loved. =(

Heard about it at work. I'm definitely thinking it was Russia - who else in that area has the tech to do something like that? It might not have even been official Russian government business, but someone there who had access to the rockets. Anyway, I'm sort of preemptively cringing at the politicking that will follow and trying not to think about it too much because the sadness of nearly 300 innocent people dying for such a STUPID set of potential reasons and their families and nobody ever finding their bodies and everything is enormous.

Oh, and then there's Israel attacking Gaza in a fresh wave.

Why is it always violence? People killing people? It's scary and rage-inducing.

I'm praying for peace. I wish there was something else I could do.
