(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 02:27 am (UTC)(link)It could have been either side, the rebels are more motivated but the Ukrainian armed forces have been trying to shoot down what they call "Russian" jets for a while. Frankly it doesn't matter in the end which set of assholes it was, what the region needs is less egos with weapons attached to them showing up, and more sitting around a table hammering out a plan (which will almost certainly require peace keeping forces, and very probably some form of autonomy at the very least for the region because the grievances of the rebels are real ones). However, with the amount of ego wrapped up on both sides -Putin wants to prove to the US that the days of pushing post-Soviet Russia around are now over, and Obama wants to prove that post-Iraq America is not militarily weakened by the war on rhetoric; and who are both pushing their regional proxies- mean that what they will get is less talking and more saber rattling.
In the meantime 298 innocent people just got diced in the crossfire.
Frankly I'll add on a ounce or two of blame to whatever corporate shill thought that routing air traffic through an active warzone was worth doing to save a few bucks in fuel and maintenance air miles.
