Your second one is also one of mine. It's worse if they're not just a buttmonkey but turn out to be evil or at least a huge jerk. It's far too convenient.

I hate any variation of making a buttmonkey/jerk out of any character whose only sin is being a rival to the protagonist in something. Even if it's something they have just as much right to try for, like winning a sporting event or being valedictorian.
