Common tropes/cliches you hate

(Anonymous) 2014-07-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry if it's been done recently.

Mine are:

- the woman who is very good at something (generally related to fighting or sports) so she won't marry or love any man unless he can beat her at it.

- someone is about to be forced into marriage with someone they don't know or just aren't attracted to, and the fall in love with someone else... so the unwanted fiance becomes a huge butt monkey. I wouldn't mind it if the fiance were the one trying to force the marriage, but otherwise it seems a lot like we're supposed to believe they deserve to be treated poorly just for not being attractive to the protagonist.

- foreign food is always nasty or gross... well, I don't really hate it, but I can't really identify with it, because I'm a pretty picky eater, but more often than not when I try something new, I actually like it.

Re: Common tropes/cliches you hate

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the last one played out where we're supposed to agree that the food is nasty or just too snobby... I think it's snobby to assume your cultural tastes are better, personally.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sure that to some extent many people's tastes are shaped by their own culture, but that doesn't mean you won't ever like something completely new. But you won't know if you don't try anything because you just think it's weird!

Squid and pineapple was pretty good. I got it at the Vietnamese restaurant.

I also like escargot, which seems to be the go-to "nasty" food that someone will accidentally order if they end up in a French restaurant without knowing how to speak French (meaning that this trope would not likely happen in real life, because by now most people know what "escargot" is even if they aren't a French speaker).

Your second one is also one of mine. It's worse if they're not just a buttmonkey but turn out to be evil or at least a huge jerk. It's far too convenient.

I hate any variation of making a buttmonkey/jerk out of any character whose only sin is being a rival to the protagonist in something. Even if it's something they have just as much right to try for, like winning a sporting event or being valedictorian.

Your second one. ARGH.

Also, the "ugly guy, hot wife" thing. I don't mind it in older comedies, but newer things really ought to have caught on how overdone and sexist it is.

Re: Common tropes/cliches you hate

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I haaaaaaate that cliche. Because it's not just about looks, it's also usually an immature man child who cannot get his shit together, yet he still warrants a hot wife who does have her shit together. Ugh, no.

Re: Common tropes/cliches you hate

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
That one really bugs me. One thing that really surprised me about Raising Hope was that Burt (Jimmy's dad) actually looks hotter than his wife (not that she's ugly or even unattractive or anything, but imo Burt's actor is noticeably more attractive)

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
The ugly (and immature) guy and hot wife annoys me because it seems to assume that no matter how unattractive (in appearance and/or personality) a man is, he is entitled to an attractive woman without the same flaws he has. Like a thin, physically attractive, supportive, reasonably mature/"has her shit together" woman is among the bare minimum of things a man deserves.

I also kind of wish someone would invert it just once, and have an unattractive woman with a hot guy portrayed the same way.

No, what really gets me is people pretending that this is sexist

...against men.

"Men are always portrayed as slobs and stupid and women are always hot and right!"

Yeah, whose fantasy do you think that's supposed to be representing? Women, don't we all want to be gorgeous, successful, and intelligent and also married to a fat, ugly, stupid slob? Just to have the intoxicating chance to always be RIGHT in the arguments? Ha ha ha that's true, it IS what all women want!

Surely the fantasy being presented is not being as slovenly and unkempt and low-league as you can get and still land a hot, successful, smart wife with zero effort except occasionally showing her a small bit of affection when your shit gets to be too much?

Oh, but since she's a shrill nag (just like all ladies want to be!) she's clearly in his league.

Oh man, so agreed on that one. The 'ugly' dude is usually an asshole as well so it's just baffling that anyone would put up his shit.

THIS. Pick almost any sitcom, and the guy will be not-hot (usually a bit funny looking and certainly not conventionally sexy) but his wife (usually housewife, I might add) is super hot. I'd love to see this reversed - a super hot, stay-at-home dad with a frumpy looking wife.

The orphaned young hero. No, seriously: I want people who have weird and complicated and dysfunctional relationships, or actually very warm relationships with their parents and still become heroes.

Cute girls or women who can't cook. It seems almost every female character in a manga or anime can't cook, and a big deal is made out of it for lulz. Recall the repeated exploding kitchen in Outlaw Star, and Akane's lack of ability to even boil water, Usagi's failed attempt at curry, Riko from Kuroko who can't even slice lemons to soak them in honey, and a hundred other examples.

It's so overdone. I'm so tired of it.

Yeah the first one of those seems like some insanely masturbatory male fantasy by a dude who's never met a woman who is actually very good at fight or sports in his life, and is a great excuse to pair her off with his Awesome Protagonist (who is, naturally, better than her at those thing). With an added bonus of her being untouched by other men, who aren't as awesome!

Me, well, I'm sick of fridging to the point where I just won't read or watch it anymore. Some dude's barely developed wife/daughter/girlfriend/some variety of female is killed off purely for the purpose of motivating angst? Thanks but no thanks, I'm putting it down/turning it off. Case in point: immediate cancellation of my Watch_Dogs preorder the second I found out what the protagonist's backstory was going to be. I know I'm not the world's arbiter of taste or good writing, and feel free not to give a fuck what I think, but if you put that in your shit you will never see a red cent from me, and I've encouraged - and continue to encourage - anyone who's as sick of the trope as I am to do the same. I think we could give this trope a rest for a few decades, if not more.

I mentioned the whole grizzled 30-something white male asskicker with manpain as protagonist last time, but I'd be pretty much okay with that disappearing for the rest of my life, too.

That the only settings for romantic comedy these days seem to be:

a.) goofy laid-back guy teaches uptight career-oriented girl to relax a bit

b.) introverted guy is taught to open up more by quirky MPDG.

and one or the other has some kind of disposable love-interest to get rid of in favor of the protagonist. Also, "hilarious" over-complicated misunderstandings. Yawn.

Single people being miserable - but not for the reasons they are IRL. It's true that being single can be very very awkward IRL, but it's less "oh no I don't have a man" and "oh shit, I'm at an office Christmas party, everyone's with their spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend, and they're all talking to me like a cute five year old even though I'm older than them." I'd love to see that. Instead it's "I'm single going to jump off a bridge." (Usually women. If a guy's single, he's just a player. Which is also annoying. There are nice guys - actual nice guys, not "nice" guys.)

The whole "ginormous stupid misunderstanding which leads to a dramatic fallout and would not have happened if these two characters had just communicated with each other like mature people" trope always pisses me off.

Not recently, no. Let's talk tropes. \0/

A character who helped the main character dies because of that. Especially annoying if it happens to multiple characters. So overdone.

A weird character is forced (or encouraged) to conform to society. Example: the Breakfast Club.

I hate when in an episodic series when there are two people who are interested in each other or are already a couple and then they meet a new person and either the guy or gal of it kinda sorta gets the hots for said person and the other person gets upset and passive agressive about it. Either have them have a secure relationship or explore this constant temptation thing and have them break up.

These characters on this show are clearly destined to get together, but we don't want it to happen yet! Better chuck a bland and unsuitable love interest at one of them!

"Badass" Girl Who Isn't Actually Badass. Particularly female characters who physically fight, but don't seem genuine in how they do it - don't have muscle, are wearing high heels and other impractical clothing, their fight scenes are really about how sexy the woman is, not what a great warrior she is, and most of all - she doesn't actually do anything. Maybe one cool initial fight scene where she meets the protagonist, or moment where she proves she's "badass", but then is useless for the rest of the story, and doesn't affect the plot in any way except that she becomes a damsel in distress or background decoration.

I hate that trope that's popular in a lot of jdramas and manga and etc where... let's say a Boy and Girl are dating or at least interested in each other, but the Boy (and it's always the boy) has some dark past, or enemies out to hurt him, or some kind of thing that he's decided is too much for Girl to handle...

and instead of just telling her about the situation directly, or letting her down easy during their breakup, decides the only way he can break up with her is to become a GIANT ASSHOLE and treat her like shit until he's pushed her away. out of fucking nowhere, he goes from a nice guy to a complete jerk, and the girl is like "??? the fuck?"

WHY CAN'T ANYONE JUST HAVE AN ADULT CONVERSATION

I've gotten ridiculously tired of shows "jumping the shark." The main reason I think it happens is because in North America the general practice is for companies to insist on having their shows go on forever. After about 4 seasons the writers don't know what to do, so they make the characters do completely out of character things! Why can't more shows be scheduled for a 3-4 season run (at most) and just tie things up at the end and MOVE ON.
