I've gotten ridiculously tired of shows "jumping the shark." The main reason I think it happens is because in North America the general practice is for companies to insist on having their shows go on forever. After about 4 seasons the writers don't know what to do, so they make the characters do completely out of character things! Why can't more shows be scheduled for a 3-4 season run (at most) and just tie things up at the end and MOVE ON.

It's not just America though. Most production companies will push to get more episodes out of something if they can. Money trumps art in the TV and movie world. :/
