The orphaned young hero. No, seriously: I want people who have weird and complicated and dysfunctional relationships, or actually very warm relationships with their parents and still become heroes.

Yeah this. I don't mind dead relatives but I feel like parents dying can become a cheap way to create angst in a story and I find that tiring.
