I was under the impression the term "manpain" was about being dismissive of men in general, not saying men can't be emotional. I don't exactly use the term, but it seems to me it comes more from the "god, stop giving men attention/making everything about men" mindset than anything else.

(And that's not exactly a mindset I disagree with.)

I've never seen it used that way. It's almost exclusively used as a form of criticism when writing makes something all about how something affects the man while ignoring the impact is has on the women in fandom circles.

It's especially prevalent in fandoms that have a loud majority of fans that stan male characters but spit endless vitriol at the female characters. In most of those cases a lot of those male characters in particular tend to have Much Angst and Sad Sobstories, or are even anti-heroes/villains, and are woobified up the wazoo. Hence, manpain.

The vampire diaries fandom and show is a perfect example of this.
