Re: Is having an active fantasy life harmful?

I think the general rule-of-thumb is: Is this negatively impacting your life in some way? (Or negatively affecting loved ones?) Is it getting in the way of things that are important or necessary to you, such as relationships, friendships, jobs and other activities?

If it's not preventing you from living your real life, then I'd say it's OK.

For example, I can tell the difference between when I'm just normally in fandom and enjoying myself, and when I'm in fandom to escape RL responsibilities. The latter is when it takes over everything and negatively impacts my work and other commitments.

Yeah, this is a good point, but I'd argue that people who daydream a lot are probably not the best judges of whether it's negatively impacting their lives. And that probably the daily life that they dismiss as too banal and mundane to be worth their full attention would be richer and fuller if they did give more of their attention to it.

I may not be the best judge, but I do think that daydreaming is better than, say, a panic attack. Or a suicidal episode. Because that's what daydreams do for me. Allow me to redirect those unhelpful emotions into something less destructive, or even productive. So in that way, my daydreaming is most certainly improving my quality of life.

If I focused exclusively on my reality, I'd be even worse off. Unless somehow you think concentrating on pain and a body that doesn't work right makes richer and fuller? All I know is that I'd rather be up and communicating with others than lying in bed, curled up in a ball. At least if I'm up, I'm creating something that others can also enjoy (fanfiction, AMVs, and the like).
